TF_squattTarget weight, depth, tow, venue – river or stillwater. Pole, wagg or feeder – too vague!!

TF_baitchefParticipantWhatever you do, just make sure you put plenty of good old brown crumb in it, skimmers have always loved it. Crushed biscuit is also a brilliant good old fashioned additive. The only difference in winter really is to possibly sieve and re blend all the large particles before you wet it.

Would the brown crumb not increase the feed content to much for winter tempratures?
Also the venue see’s a lot of fishmeal through the summer and autum. -

TF_baitchefParticipantPossibly, but providing you sieve it well and re blend all the particles it should be fine. You could add a bit of ground fish meal, i cant see any problem with that. I would also be tempted to mix it well in advance to make it inert.
The thing is that sometimes i make my own mixes and in the past i have caught well using a red mix in winter, made using powdered red food colouring from the oriental supermarkets added to the ingredient above. But if your not sure it might be better to stick to the pre packaged of the shelf commercial brands. Ringers are as good as any of the others. -

TF_CutnutIF the venue sees alot of pellet all year round then you can bet that the skimmers will be happy to take that as a hookbait. Have two lines going one where you feed small expander and well ground-up expander slop/soup. On the other feed either next to nothing or put in two to five balls of groundbait in a line depending on conditions.
If it’s really towing and you have some good ripple, lets say to the left, then I would put the line of g/b balls in on the left hand swim. The loose feed line then to the 2 o’clock position.
What you do is fish the right hand line with a ‘laid in to the left’ rig allow the rig to inch along in the tow holding back every few inches or feet (depends on speed of tow). Do this until you are over the g/b line and continue past it by several feet. Two different rigs are useful one that bimbles just at bottom but that wafts up when you hold back.
If you see the float hesitate you either have a holdup bite or you have caught some debris, lifting into it will tell you which. Remember where this happens to either be ready for a fish or draw your float through. The other is double bulked with the last shot of the bottom bulk just on bottom. The bites will either go straight down or more likely the float will come up. Be prepared to hold this second rig still against the tow more than the searching rig.
If you don’t have tow or very little then you have to search the arc yourself. Keep an eye on the water if it is calm enough you may see when the fish turn up by the small fizzing ripples, fish through these as the fish will be moving in and out of it.
On more natural fed waters I would keep to more natural baits such as dead pinkies and chopped worm. Double red maggot, worm head caster….. but the technique applies.

TF_baitchefParticipantI just thought actually if your going down the fish meal route, then a good mix is to scald some micros in a ground bait bowl with boiling water. Pour off the excess water immediately then add equal quantities of a good fish meal based ground bait. mix it thoroughly adding cold water ass you go. leave it to rest then mix again getting air into it. The result is a lovely soft mix that will bind well but break up on the deck, leaving a nice carpet for them to graze over. The micros soften but hold their shape and because they are soft they are easily digestible. A well presented expander over the top is deadly.

Ive tried it and done fairly well with it, got lots of feed in it, so been riddling out the larger bits. Mix is also sticky but does seem to work well for the F1’s/brown goldfish in the lake i fish and skimmers seem to like it also.
Might be worth mixing with something more “traditional” if silvers are the target to cut the feed down for the winter…
