TF_baitchefParticipantTo be honest with you I cant see why you would need anything other than a tdr 3012. They are more than sufficient for any feeder fishing situation you are going to find yourself in this country. In fact, in the states the equivalent reels get a serious workout and are used for far more demanding situations than you find here. The Airity is a better reel, but only from an engineering point of view and if you can afford one then go for it, but don’t be led into thinking that they are a necessity, because they ain’t.

TF_HillbillyAs per baitchef a TDR 3012 won’t let you down. I have 5 and not had any problems with any of them to date. The front drag system is superb and the reel has plenty of winding power. The 2508 is a great little reel but for general feeder work the bigger spool of the 3012 is the way to go.

TF_macca63The TDR3012 is a cracking reel, cant really see the point of forking out on the more expensive Daiwa models to be honest, the front drag is really smooth never had any problems

TF_wildingukFor feeder fishing the 3012 tdr takes some beating, though it does entirely depend what rod you are pairing it with.
If you’re smaller feeder fishing, the 2508 size is a nicer match, and again the tdr is great.
For waggler fishing, though, I think the tdx might be a better partner in the double handle. I have tdrs, but find the wind a little on the ‘loose’ and easy side for my style of fishing. The double handle tdx feels a little more shimano if you knoiw what I mean? And that’s the feeling I prefer for waggler fishing.
As for price differences, there is more tech in both the tdx and airity. Is it worth the extra, only you can decide. All are proven reels, and none would let you down.
As for the preston, depends if you think this huge spool thing is a gimmic or will help you cast further, and you’re chucking it a long way. But if you’re throwing it a long way all the time, you’d be better off looking at a mini big pit reel like the ringers do. Have the ultegra xsb 4500 myself, and it’s the dogs danglies. The line way is so smooth you could have ironed it on, and the only limiting factor in casting distance will be you and your technique.

TF_HillbillyIf its a big spool reel you want have a look at the Daiwa Tournament Whisker SS2600, great bit of kit and you can get one for around £85.

AnonymousAlthough the TDX and the Airity might have one or two extra little features than the TDR i honestly believe that the difference to them and the TDR’s is miniscule and dont warrant the extra amount they cost..In fact the TDR’S have everything you need in a reel for either feeder fishing or float fishing and in my opinion are the best reels on the market in their price catagory and above and thats why i’ve just bought two more TDR 3012’s myself..I’ve also got some TDR 25O8’s which are ideal for waggler fishing and medium/decent size chucks on the feeder.

TF_squattI use 2503 & 3003 cu’s, Exceller plus 4000’s and Shimano Titanos – depends where you’re fishing.

TF_squattNathan try and make a Daiwa 3000/4000 do the job of a Titanos or similar and you will come up short everytime on distance when long ranging imo.

TF_NathanWatsonI use 4000 Shimanos and for all the venues I go they are fine. I know bigger reels will cast further but don’t go anywhere i need to cast further than I can reach with my Shimanos and the reason for having them all the same is so I can count turns and be sure to be at same distance and they also all feel the same so get used to them for casting.
