Newport’s James Tanner is £500 better off after his win in the weekend’s big sea match, the Pill Angling Centre Gwent Open, fished at St Brides near his home town.

James, who was fishing the match for the first time, took the £400 top prize plus £100 pools money thanks to a 7lb 15oz ‘strap’ conger, taken  on mackerel half way through the match from in front of the Lighthouse Hotel.

Second spot and £200 went to Cardiff SAA’s Steve David, who had two silver eels and a small conger from the Peterstone end of the beach for 5-12-0. The same catch for 5-7-0 was enough for third place for Cod Squad’s Paul Evans. The top three scored 20, 19 and 18 Penn points respectively.
