BRITISH Waterways have released thousands of new fish into the in-form Birmingham/Fazeley Canal after admitting zander are damaging stocks.

The batch of fish reared at Riverfield Fish Farm in Kent included 2,000 bream, 2,000 chub and 750lb of roach.

They were released at three spots – Hopwas, Fazeley and Fisherwick near Whittington. A BW spokesman said the stocking was part of an ongoing policy to balance out depletion of stocks caused by zander.

The venue has been in fine form of late with match anglers regularly weighing in over 10lb of roach on bloodworm and joker tactics and one January match fished after breaking the ice being won with over 20lb of skimmers. The venue is feature in this month’s Midland Angler.
