…. I cant believe it! I foul hooked an 6oz eel and as I grabbed the tail it turned and bit me on the inside of the wrist. It had taken a proper hold and I had to use force to get it off. I wouldnt say it was a blood bath but it drew blood.

I gave it a tetanus and it swam off ok, but i dont hold out much hope for it 🙂

        Has anyone else experienced this?

Nothing to do with eels but on Saturday I impailed my hand on a Guru baiting needle. Is was well in and felt pretty solid. When I finally gave it a good yank it came out but broke and left a quarter on the shaft and barb in my hand. 2 proceedures Sat & Sun in A&E and no luck removing it. I have to go in this afternoon to see a hand specialist to have it removed. It shows up well on the xray right next to the bone but they can’t seem to find it.

I heard you telling Gary Miller about the eel when it bit you Simon, can’t say that I have ever been bitten by one myself though. They will clamp on a disgorger occasionally though and are hard to shift.

As for foulhooking, I don’t think that many are foulhooked at all. I have seen them twisting themselves up in the line and as they twist, the hook is pulled from their mouths and then sticks in somewhere else. I have also seen them trying to break the line with their tails as I have reeled them in. They take 2 or 3 hard swipes at the line. Sometimes they do break the line and people say they have been bitten off. When they take a swipe like that the hook could pull and end up in their tails.

I was a bit concerned because it fanged around one of the main veins running along my wrist, i have the scars to prove it :). I had visions of another air ambulance visit – god forbid that ever happens again.

Anyway Gary took full advantage of the handicapped angler on the next peg and narrowly beat me – by 8lb.

                  I only weighed 8lb odd!

I just hope that I don’t draw that area again next week. 5 out of 6 matches just isn’t fair 🙁 . Of course when the roach are seriously having a go later in the year I will draw down at Langley. 😀

If you foul hooked an eel you should have done the lottery that night. They are almost impossible to foul hook… I once fished for catfish with eels on the Ebro (illegal these days I think) but it was almost impossible to get a hook into them even when you had hold of them…

That is not the first eel that I have foul hooked, I once had three in a single match earlier this year – must have been solid.

They aren’t foulhooked when you get the bite Simon, just by the time you get them in. Some of the pegs are solid with them though, especially the ones with very few skimmers in them and in the 50’s. They are tiny though, some are down to pencil size aren’t they? Reminds me of the days when we would put them in a bait box and the box in the keepnet to weigh them in. 🙂
