Looking for a new reel for long range feeder fishing but i need help.I currently use a tdr 2508 which is ok but i`m getting outcast.I know that the rod also makes a difference and that is sorted but its the reel that is causing problems.I need something with a quick retrieve and large spool but not to bulky so any suggestions would be well recieved

daiwa 4000 reel, something like a calida. For proper distance get a shimano titanos or ultegra.

I agree with squatt,Daiwa caldia x.I have 2 of the 4000 size, but they do them in 3 smaller sizes.

I used to do a lot of long range fishing at Coombe Abbey years ago and in my experience you got yards if you polished the blank and rod rings and that the reel choice was largely immaterial.

There is also absolutely no substitute for achieving long range and accuracy other than practice: Something to be said for the old closed season is that it meant that I spent a fair bit of time on playing fields practicing range and accuracy.

Sorry don’t agree that reel choice doesn’t matter. Once you start chucking 65m+(which is about 80 turns on a Daiwa 4000) it makes alot of difference. If you use a Shimano mini pit reel the line lay is completely different due to the slightly bigger but much longer spool. There is no bedding in etc and the line/braid just peels off. These reels also make the retrieve easier as they wind just over a meter per turn.

prestons PXR 5000 is a great casting reel, 1 turn is 800mm also the new PCRs are worth a look they are doing them in 4000, 5000 and a 6000!!

If you like the TDR, just get the bigger size!

I have a pair of Browning 665FD’s which are very good for long range casting. Previously I had Daiwa TDA 3500’s (still have them actually) which are perfect for up to about 75-80yds. I have noticed though that having that bigger spool (both width and length) does make a difference once you get past 80yds.

Thats a proper 80yds mind, none of this ‘I was chucking 80yds’ when there only going 40! 😉

Mike just out of interest what make and diammeter braid do you use. Also have you seen the new Berkley Nanofil.

Fireline in 8lb straight through. I have some 6lb but don’t find any difference in distance so stick to 8lb. Not seen nanofil ‘ in the flesh’ but seen it on the web. Thing is, I have ~1000yds of fireline in the shed and I’m happy with it so I see no reason to change 🙂 🙂
