Nipped down to my local canal yesterday, having fished a local lake for the summer months and was looking foward to some Autumnal/Winter canal fishing (Punch & Squatts instead of Meat, Corn & Pellets!) however, on arrival the canal was totally covered in a green scum, which I’ve later found out to be algae. This is the first time I’ve experienced this on this canal, at least to this extent. 40 pegs were unfishable, but I found a stretch from pegs 41 onwards that were clear and could be fished. My question is, what is the possible short/long term damage of such an algae bloom? Is it worth fishing the clear stretches (now) and if the algae receeds, what about fishing the stretches that were covered (later in the year)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and for those that are possibly local, the canal stretch I’m talking about is Tamworth Road, Long Eaton.

Algae bloom can be a very good feature to fish at the side of in the first place. EVERY canal gets Algae at some point it will not do any long term damage. I would suggest fishing on the edge of it. You not tried Chopped worm on that stretch?

Thanks Nathan, having not seen this extent of algae in the past couple of years fishing the Erewash I was a little concerned. Funnily enough, I was advised to fish up to the cover while I sat wondering if it was fishable! And yes, chopped worm on this stretch is awesome! but I tend to find not exclusively, and needs to be accompanied by other lines/baits/tactics . . .
