              Would have thought they were wearing life jackets, the water must have been freezing though.

                    Very sad indeed.
                    I recall fishing one of the big Thames Champs maybe the first one and someone doing that and nearly drowning – he lost all his kit, but got to the side. Others who were fishing it might remember that too.
