TF_AbiParticipantAngling Trust secures Winter League
By Angling Times
25 August 2011 11:38It is with great pleasure that Angling Times can announce it is to hand over the running of the Team Champs to the sport’s governing body, the Angling Trust.
It is the paper’s belief that whenever possible major events should come under the wing of the Trust, much the way the FA is at the forefront of all competitive football in Britain. The announcement follows detailed discussions that were unfortunately extended due to a very busy schedule for the Angling Trust with the body preparing to send all its International teams to the World Champs in Italy. The finalising of a sponsor was also a consideration.
The event will know be known as the Angling Trust Winter league and will carry a supporting sponsorship name. The structure of the event will largely remain the same although the Trust will make a few minor changes to rules.
Angling Times editor Richard Lee said: “This is great news and it has long been a plan to hand over every viable event to the sport’s governing body. An umbrella body for match angling was the vision of my old friend Rodney Coldron, who worked tirelessly for many years at the National Federation of Anglers to promote the sport, and I vowed one day the event would be his. And now, I’ve finally been true to my word.
“Sadly this year the Maver Pairs had to fold as a lack of support from match anglers made the event totally unworkable. Thankfully, the Winter League is still alive and hopefully the excellent team at the Angling Trust can take the event on to the next level.
“Angling Times is totally committed to match fishing and currently runs Clubman events and leagues as well as the County Champs – highly costly, labour intensive data driven projects that are currently impossible to hand over the Trust.”
Angling Times will continue to cover the Winter League in print and online to celebrate the achievements of the nation’s matchmen. Finally, Angling Times would like to take this opportunity to thank Ken and Jackie Wade for running the Team Champs on behalf of the paper. They have organised the tournament with professionalism and passion, in what at times has seemed a thankless task. Cheers guys.
Further details of the Winter League will be printed in Tuesday’s AT.

TF_joffmiestercheers abi for letting us know i would like to be the first to thank Ken and Jackie for there dedication throughout the years of the winter leagues the up and downs they must of put up with over the years 😉 😉 😉 i’l miss the phone calls jackie 😉
i think its too late for us this year with less than 5 weeks to go and with most of the Angling trust making there way across to italy for the world champs later this month time has run out
i don’t think its a bad thing either to miss one year as anglers will realise how much they will miss the winter league and perhaps next year most will be up for it again for a new challenge i know we will
lucky for us as we are rebuilding the squad and october is already partly filled with the sensas final in france
i hope the angling trust don’t try and rush something together this is a big chance for a brand new competition to take off
and don’t worry i’l still read the ANGLING TIMES 😉 😉 😉 😉 😉
and thanks for the many years you have supported the competition 🙂 -

25/08/2011 at 4:11 pm #147602
TF_joffmiesterEVERY COMPETITION ANGLER SHOULD BE A MEMBER of the angling trust if you played another sport you’d have be a member of the association thats involved ie whether you play football at the highest level or the lowest every club and player has to be a member of the football association 😉 😉
the angling trust do a lot of good and are probably the only organisation that fight our corner -
25/08/2011 at 4:24 pm #147603
TF_the wizardSo do we just guess whats happening this year? Do you know Abi?

TF_Tim_DOh dear, so the winter league final has now moved on to a commercial, suppose it was inevitable. very sad moments i think. 🙁
-
25/08/2011 at 5:50 pm #147611
TF_jwbAt least its all out in the open 🙂
I would suggest that yes everyone will now have to be a member of the Angling trust but as far as i am concerned everyone should be any way 🙂
Very disappointing that the final is going to a commercial but I suppose inevitable 😡
Would not be supprised if thats the way the semis go as well 🙁 -
25/08/2011 at 5:57 pm #147615
TF_sheriffSorry time for Team fishing!!!!
Just a thought but some leagues are made up of liitle clubs or groups of anglers made up to enter the yearly fixture who come to take part knowing that they are not really in with a chance of winning…….now lets say there are 20 of them who dont go in Fishos, league fees are normally £60 and now under the Angling Trust £560……Id say thats goodbye to the winter league as we all know it.
I for 1 have just pulled our team out the league for this year 😡 😡 😡

TF_ropaCould this decision and announcement have not come a lot sooner?? 😡 A lot of leagues will be underway in a month, with venues booked and teams assembling. Any decisions regarding memebership to the trust and size of squads should be left for this year and let the old format continue for the time being. Discussions on next years W/L can be left until this years has finished.

think thats what the actual press release basically says? im sure next year you will definately have too and as wayne says the smaller teams who dont all enter fisho’s will not stump up another £25 EACH!
Maybe were all wrong? and the more will be announced in next weeks AT what a load of SH17E! havent you bunch of dirtbag money driven fools at baeur or whatever they call them selves already made us wait too long! this will probably kill the winter league! “happy too announce the the passing over too the angling trust” etc etc what a load of total bullsh!7e! They’v done it cuz theres no money for them too make out of us! And im sure next weeks PLAN will not up sales not even for 1 week! R.I.P AT

TF_the margin gnomeThe problem is the press release says nothing. We all knew the angling times wanted rid of the winter league. The question everyone is asking is whats happening now? Are the arrangements the same? Is it £60 a team? Why not disclose this at the same time as the announcement. Still nobody knows nothing as to what is required to fish the winter league this year.

25/08/2011 at 7:51 pm #147628
TF_SluicerI’ve read & re-read the press statement from Angling Times and I’m sorry, but I’m just not buying this ‘we’ve been planning this for ages’ garbage.
It seems to me that the bean-counters in charge of the purse-strings at Angling Times lost patience and wanted shut of the financial overheads involved in the Winter League.
Angling Times look like they’ve set themselves as using this as another cash-cow – like opening-up the Individual National last year and Fish O Mania this year. I’m all for the inclusive approach, but being so ‘in your face’ with this is a little too much.
I should qualify the above statement by saying, before the sniping starts, that I am – and have been an AT member since it’s inception. That said, this is looking very much like a train-crash of a handover between the two ATs. If this was such a long term plan, why has Joe Carass revealed more than the official announcement? I really don’t understand why the statement from AT was ‘padded out’ with so much meaningless fluff. If they’d planned all this, the interested parties should already know what the rules are, what the fees are and what the dates are.
It’s a mess, and as someone has already stated, the club anglers who have competed in winter leagues for years and who have never had any aspirations towards Nationals, etc. aren’t going to bite the big one now to join the AT. In ‘saving’ the Winter League, the Angling Trust could actually kill it off in many areas.
-
25/08/2011 at 8:31 pm #147632
TF_Kagger TNBThe winter league wont be killed off in Norfolk and Suffolk ‘cos it’s been dead so long that Tony Robinson’s going to do a telly program on it…
The Angling Times wanted rid.
The Angling Trust WANT to take it on.
Can’t see much happening this coming winter in the way of changes, but why not wait and see what happens next year before critisizing?
It could actually be for the best… 🙂

TF_lloydy1970Ive just signed anglers to take team to 22 as we’ve changed leagues, so if they reduce team sizes do i just drop anglers I’ve signed? Also when teams dropped from 12 to 10 anglers didnt go to other teams they just dropped out.

26/08/2011 at 9:40 am #147651
TF_joffmiesterreading the posts from earlier i don’t think it will be the membership cost that will withdraw a number of teams i’m sure it will be the fact that the final going to a commercial will up set a few and no doubt the semis will go to commercials as well
my biggest bug is the fact there are hundreds of anglers that stay-away from commercials as they just don’t want to go down those lines they are natural venue anglers through and through, don’t you think there is enough going on for the commercial anglers these days why push more and more towards commercials
i would like to think the angling trust will listen to all corners of the sport before running the competition if it means no winter league for us this year fare play -
26/08/2011 at 10:12 am #147652
TF_oddmanI would like to say that the league I run fishes on 6 comercials. the reason for this is the lower teams will not fish against stronger teams on canals ie bloodworm and joker fishing. I know the stronger teams would still like to fish canals but they have realised that if they insisted there would be no league, as the lower teams wont fish. The stronger teams that came into our league actually let the lower teams pick the venues and dont object. That was a condition they agreed to so the lower teams would stay.
Im sure the angling trust will let each team that are not members of the trust pay 60 quid for team entry this year just like the angling times. As they know that a lot of the lower teams will pull out if they dont.
I think its a good idea to reduce squad sizes the top teams could possibly put another team in the league. I think the team size should also be reduced from 10 to 8 or even 6 men.
Just my thoughts -

TF_matt hainesFrom my experience of the winter league it was pretty much down to ken wade and his team so really without them then its gonna be hard to keep it going as strong as it was! especially with everyone having to pay the angling trust £25 quid, are the angling trust gonna put any prize money up for it? from what ive heard the england teams have had to pay for there own travel and digs to fish the world champs, so what are the angling trust gonna do for team fishing if our national teams are not supported!
-
28/08/2011 at 12:20 pm #147731
TF_FBluesmatt haines: Are you a member of the Angling Trust, because I suspect not. That being the case, where do you think the money to pay for the international teams is going to come from? Do you think that Trust has Abramovich or the Sultan of Dubai in the back office? The international teams have ALWAYS paid their own way, with the help of sponsors, since they started practicing. In the old days, when we only entered the ‘mens’ team event, there was NO practice and England pitched up the day before. Won sod-all too, except the odd individual medal.
Now if we were ALL members and supported our sport WE could pay for them to go. But, hey, if Carlsberg represented fishing etc etc etc.

28/08/2011 at 1:16 pm #147734
TF_torowell said fb could we not put extra £1 on the annual fishing licence would this be more benificial as we all would be members then.
we are only talking £25 which is 5 bags groundbait or 4 gallon of fuel so £25 is a bloody bargain considering its £400 to join my golf club and thats cheap -
28/08/2011 at 1:27 pm #147735
TF_matt hainesyea im a member of the angling trust pretty much when it started even before it was compulsory to join to fish fish o qualifiers! and have not fished any fish o qualifiers this year, i even posted in support of the angling trust which i also think everyone should be a member of, or should someway pay into it, the fact tho is people who dont wanna join wont! and by making people have to pay it will just force people to look elsewhere for matches to fish! i sure im not on my own when i say the way this has all come out about a month before the winter league starts is wrong! when i fished for england youth i paid for myself so i know how it used to work! all im saying is if the trust cant someway support our national team even help pay for there tackle to be shipped over then what chance has the winter league got? straight away they have spolt it for me moving the final to a commercial! at the very min i would like to see a split final natural venue/ commie, but would prefer an out and out natural venue final!
-
29/08/2011 at 1:03 pm #147756
TF_FBlues‘They’ve’ not moved it for any other reason than Partridge Lakes are sponsoring the entire event! To fish a final, or even both semis come to that, elsewhere is akin to Drennan sponsoring the men’s England team and telling them they’ve all got to use Mustad hooks!
Glad you’re in mate, but remember the ATr has to spend OUR money. MANY, MANY carp anglers are members – over 250 joined in just two shows I was at least year – so how would THEY feel to see their dough spent on a match team? Obviously some A Tr money IS spent on the WC’s, because the officials go.
As I said, I look at it that the Team Champs will now be a benefit of A Tr membership, as Fisho is. If anyone wants to run a rival league, they have every chance now. There are already LOADS, nearly all run on commercials for teams of 6 so now is their chance to go National – if they are A Tr members of course.

TF_joffmiesterfblues some great points there i’m all for change and have thanked the support of angling times ,the problem i see for this year is it was announced too late with a lot of the ATr away in Italy means it will be very hard to get leagues organised if they are thinking about changes team size for one. the problem i see if all anglers have to be members of ATr [which every competition angler should be] i can’t the anglers that are and have been against join the trust from the start are going to join at this stage of the year for a winter league.it not a problem for top teams its the teams down the pecking order that make up 80% of all winter leagues .this why A/T clubman competition has been successful

Hi Joff, thanks for the kind words in earlier posts, Jackie will miss your calls and e-mails!
I am not going to get into this thread but I am not sure where all this “Its too late” thing is coming from. Like everyone else I have no idea what the Angling Trust are going to do, but it has been said there are not going to be any major changes this year. They are taking over the Team Champs so where is the problem, the leagues are all in place, they are run by very good match organisers, venue’s have been booked, job done and to be fair no one thinks about the team champs until a couple of weeks before the off anyway!! Changes may take place in the future, we will have to wait and see what happens but this year everything ready to go.

TF_the margin gnomeDo all anglers fishing have to be individual members of the AT? Who is going to check if so? There are still questions i dont know answer to. I havent seen paper today so if someone could enlighten id be grateful.

TF_oddmanI have just phoned bob dipper from angling trust, he is in italy with the world champs he said there will be no more details until they come back next week. As far as im concerned i will run our league as normal until i know anything different. It will be impossible to sort things out in 3 weeks, so league has to be more or less the same format as in the past.

TF_kwadej“i know what your saying ken but normally by now we have had a AGM and selected the sections i hope i’m wrong but its asking a lot for this year”
Sorry mate, not trying to split hairs, but not getting sorted with AGM and sections has not got a lot to do with the change over has it?
It was not just you talking about leaving it late, but no one had any idea about the switch a month ago??
Anyway I do hope it all gets sorted for the Soar Valley League, it has been going for a very long time and has been the backbone of winter fishing in your area for many, many years.
Good Luck
Ken
