TF_AKMEGAJParticipantHi All,
My trusty motor is coming to the end of its life. I’m ready to buy a new (2-3 yr old) estate and wondered what other anglers would choose or drive. I’d like to be able to carry 2 full sets of match kit (2m long holdalls, 2 Rive boxes, 2 platforms, carryalls, ground bait buckets etc etc). I’m going to spend a fair wad so don’t want to have to carefully place boxes in the back and risk scratching paint work etc.
What’s your thoughts!
PS I’ve thought about buying a van but decided on another estate.

TF_NathanWatsonWhat have you been using? If that was big enough, surely another of the same or updated model? How about a Hearse?

TF_tewtonbmw tourer is rubbish, rear wheel drive means poor boot space, one rive box is all I can fit.

TF_Waveney OneYou could probably buy a Challenger 2 with all the cuts that are taking place in the Army. No problem driving to your peg in that and there would always be room in the car park. Just drive on top of anything in your space!!

TF_SliderVolvo V50 between 01 and 03 plate are massive, more than enough room for 2 Rives, then again I get 2 in my Volvo 850 plus 4 rod bags, 2 carryalls, 2 large buskets 8 keepnets and trolleys etc.

TF_Mr WhippyI have a 2006 E class Mercedes Estate which is one of the biggest out there. I would say with two Rives etc you should look at the Mercedes R Class. Its still in my view a car rather than SUV. They are 4 wheel drive and the long wheel base version is particularly large. they came out about 4 years ago and are now a good seond hand buy. Great specs too.
I travel a lot on my own, if I regularly travelled with someone with same amount of stuff as me I would have got an R Class! -

FloatmakerParticipantVOLVO V70 every time!! There are several advantages to these. Firstly they have a huge load space with the rear seats folded down and it’s a nice flat base right up to the back of the front seats. The rear hatch opening is very wide going almost to the edge of the car and the rear window is very flat which means the available height is there almost right to the back of the car. I often travel with a mate and we have also taken personal luggage when we stayed away for a week at a tournament so there is more than enough room. Another advantage of the Volvo is that they go on forever and ever if maintained well.
Hope this helps. Graham -

TF_drawbag1967I’ve got a BMW estate and the boot space is garbage, Mondeos have got a lot of room but by the sounds of it you’d do better buying a small minibus and ripping out the seats.

snaptackleVectra estate diesel huge and 45-50 mpg

17/02/2011 at 6:16 pm #132691
TF_John PriceAnother to put into the mix as a thought is the renault laguna!! My outlaws have one as a work horse and it has so much room in the rear (I would say as much as the Mondeo) and with a 6 speed diesel lump it is good on the fuel as well (a consideration which must be at the high point in most peoples list at present)!!!

TF_mp.miloVolvo v70,my mate got one and we get 2 lots of tackle in it easy.1 Rive box,1 milo box,2 mossella compact 8 holdalls,2 preston monster carryalls,trolleys,2 bait bags,2 net bags, biggest Rive sidetray.
And it can even write off a Mercedes and a Bmw as we did before xmas and still drove home !! -

TF_andynorth2003ParticipantDont go for an A4 estate, similar to the 3 series Touring, too narrow at the back.
Need to put the roof box on to fit two lots of gear in, which is not good for my street cred!! lol -

I have one of these and i got to say its not big enough. its not long enough to lay your holdall down without going between the front seats. unlike the vectra where i can.

TF_CutnutVolvo 850 ~ v70 Thule roof box, three rodbags 6nets,landing net heads, two ready rod bags three holdalls, three bait buckets, three milo boxes, two platforms one trolley, seats three and still room for boots clothing and going away kit.
Downside is that by the time you’ve packed it all in the mpg sucks out at 20 ~ 30mpg depending how heavy your clogg is.

TF_scarfMondeo every time. Loads of space, nice to drive and there’s lots of them about. Or, if you want to pay a bit more for the badge, 5 series BMW. A4s and 3 series are too short to get the holdalls behind the front seats. If they weren’t so new I’d add the Skoda Superb to the list as well.
Nearly forgot – Rhino bootliners Kev, spot on.

TF_dave brittainI have a Laguna and have to say it drives well, has excellent MPG with a 6 speed box and is very comfortable however on the downside they are prone to minor electrical faults and you’ll struggle to get two lots of kit in it especially if you have Rive boxes.
On a budget I’d look at the Mondeo as they drive very well and are very reliable.
At the higher end of the market I’d look at either a Volvo or Audi A6.

TF_Waveney OneMy old Mondeo Estate has the floor level with the tail gate. No lifting boxes over a 6 ” lip. Anyone know why most cars have that lip? Literally a waste of metal in what could be space!

TF_kev825going through a similar scenario myself and have just ordered a Fiat Scudo Combi. 2.0 Ltr Diesel 120 bhp. 2 front seats. 3 back seats and the rear compartment is left empty and more than big enough for 2 Rive boxes and all the rest of the kit we have to carry about. One of the back seats folds forward and can even be clipped out easy as. Then you have loads of room to lay 2 mtr rod bags in the space. And there are sliding doors on both rear passenger sides and double doors at the back
Sorted.

TF_mart16seams loads of people are having the same problems.i’ve had an a6 saloon for 9 years now,i found one with back seats that would drop down, not many about.i’m also looking for an estate and reckon if you can afford an a6 they are superb.like has been said an holdall will go in without the need to thread em up the middle, and they are front wheel drive so the load space stays wide all the up.i’ve looked at the bm’s and my brothers got the a4 estate and they are both not wide enough or long enough.
i reckon the mondeo’s the next best option.the st looks great but what’s your front bumper gonna look like when you’ve been up a few fishing venue tracks(cos they are all made for tractors).them titanium new shaped look nice. -

TF_Leaky Lloydkev23
im just wondering how much tackle you take with you matey, ive got an a4 avant s-line and whilst i admit it aint the biggest, theres plenty of room for my tackle alone, and i sometimes take me mate
so thats
2x boxes (ones a rive xt aswell)
2x carryalls
2x ready rod holdalls
2x pole holdalls
2x doube net bags
2x trolleys
and a few bait buckets and bait bagsfair enough its so full that when you fart you can taste it, but we get it in never the less !
packing a car for fishing is an art form,if i was as good at fshing as i was at packing id be 1 gold up on big Al Scothorne!,
put it a certain way and you just wont get it all in!!!
i put the boxes right up against the seats facing each other wich leaves a channel down the middle for the rods and poles carryalls go either side next to the box, nets up against back doors and other bits just placed ontop of the other stuff,,

TF_AKMEGAJParticipantThanks to everyone for the very useful inputs. I’m torn between a Volvo V70 (new style) and an Audi A6 Avant. But I’ve made my mind up and tomorrow I’m off to buy a V70 (high mpg and flat boot space with seats down has won me over). My Merc C220 estate is up for sale (trade in).
