TF_D.W.Thats not a blown method Fred lol Just nobody does it anymore (would still work now if people actually wanted to do so). I used to love having a day on the bleak on the Gt Ouse where I used to live or a day on the Gudgeon on a local backwater (the gudgeon averaged 15 to the pound!).

TF_One Out of the FrameTrying to avoid the massive (2oz) gudgeon at the Recreation Ground Stratford to catch 15lb of chub and roach!
Fishing the chopped lobworm for perch on canals.
Breadpunch for roach and a waggler fished caster up the far bank on a 13 metre wide canal!
Hmmmmm. Progress eh?

TF_One Out of the FrameFishing gear that you could carry AND get four mates in an average car if you had a roof rack!
Dawn draws and weigh in by 1100hrs!
Not being blown out by the weather (it was only when carp fishing that I have been ‘defeated’ by the wind blowing in the wrong direction – never used to get that on the cuts!).
Bonus fish and actually having to play them rather than haul!
Having to get to a venue for daybreak to stand a chance of getting a peg if you were pleasuring.

TF_allyParticipantUsing squatts for bream.
West Draton/ Slough Arm seem to have disapeared off the map, some might say that was a good thing!!!

TF_The RunnerRight, which ones of the above have I done in matches the last year…
Fished for bleak? Yes, Thames at Dorchester and elsewhere
Chopped lob on canal- Yes, Slough Arm (for an hour. Didnt work
Waggler on 13m wide canal- Yes, Slough Arm again (unbelievably clear so wag or whip better bet than pole a lot of the time)
Swingtip for bream? Yes, parrot cage peg 9 at Farlows, can’t get a proper angle on quivertip
Match on R Lea ? No, not been there for years- used to fish the odd open at St Margarets
Sticklebacks? No , but did fish for minnows for half the match in a teams of 4 on the Colne a couple of years ago. Had 2-14-8 of them. Should have done it all match as had nothing else but got default section anyway.
Loads of sticklebacks in Redbournbury Fishery near Harpenden. Tried to chopped worm it but soon changed…West Drayton- last match I heard of there was last winter and a mass blank. The new marina at the junction with the Slough Arm hasn’t done it any favours as think all the fish now go in there for the winter (its pretty much put paid to the shoaling up at Benbow Waye further up the canal as well by all accounts)
Slough Arm.Yes; Still has club matches booked on it virtually every Sunday from October to March on the boats section at Langley, as well as the London WL.Some small midweek knock ups as well- the bit at the Black Bridge behind Little Britain going back towards Lizard is full of skimmers in spring and summer
Content with catching 3 lb ? Yes, as long as its competitive
Stret pegging? Sadly its died out- I drew next to the Professor a couple of years ago on the Colin Ambrose Memorial at Rickmansworth and even he was on the pole.”O tempora, o mores” as he would probably say.
-
08/12/2010 at 7:35 pm #124813
TF_The RunnerAnd more..
Breadpunch- Yes, canals and R Colne
Gear you can carry? Yes, matches on R Cherwell; folding seat, two rods, nets, rucksack. If you’ve been there you’ll understand why
Think I’m in a minority here…..

Hello Fred the last Winter League match on the Crown (River Lea) was four years ago,it was the London Winter League.
I was also told that Chris`s Perch weighed 4lb 6oz.Decaff there are no match organisers left in our area apart from Gary Eales and Sid Wilson who run the London Winter league and the practice matches the week before.

I looked at a few of the chub pegs but it didn’t motivate me to fish, too cold brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Martin glad to see your still giving the old methods a good bashing, I used to love bleak bashing with the old crinkled greased line, has anyone tried that recently? last ten years? lol

TF_Fred DavisPaulD recently bumped into Andy Love on the civil service individual National where he finished 3rd pipping me by a few ounces into 4th place still as proactive about the sport as he relaid how he had caught a speciman crucian from marsh farm where the event was being held, bought back some memories I can remember when he won the thames champs at cherry orchard lane I was next peg and won the section by default must have been near on 25 years ago, I took solace in winning the team event, (however someone else nicked my team trophie & Laa gold section winners medal) nothing changes lol

TF_bryanhParticipantBailey’s Kestrel, yellow groundbait, the only one available in the late 50s
Courier hooks to nylon, ditto Allcocks Model Perfects.
Quarter inch square elastic for making catapults.
Valve rubber from the bike shop to make float rubbers.
Trip to the butchers for sausage rusk (white or pink) for groundbait.
Aluminium maggot boxes.
Sneaking into Newmillerdam in Wakefield to fish for bream at two in the morning and tiptoeing past the bailiff’s house in case he heard us. (fishing wasn’t allowed until 8.00am)
