Do you know why braid was used in angling for hooklinks? It was so that the bait could move around naturally and the heavier breaking strains for the same diameter of mono allowed for better abrasion resistance against snags. Mouth damage from braids ONLY occurs when using the lower diameter/low breaking strain braids and if the fish is not hooked in the lip. This is the reason why specialist anglers use hooklinks of heavier breaking strain than the reel line & mouth damage is almost completely eradicated. There are many other reasons for mouth damage that are more prevalent than the use of braid such as the use of heavy elastics with small hooks that cause hookpulls and tears when bullying away from snags/weedbeds/rushes/etc, swinging fish in that are obviously too big to be done without the mouth tearing, large barbless hooks (why do you think more and more specimen waters are insisting that barbed hooks are used and none of the fish have mouth damage?), etc, etc.
If the fish is hooked in the lip (which is the best place to hook them as it is the strongest part of the fishes mouth, then the hooklink material does not even touch the mouth during the fight & there is no chance of “cheesewiring”.How many match anglers carry around a carp care kit in their tackle? I would hazard a very good guess that it is less than 0.0001% as they are more worried about getting the fish out of the landing net & into the keepnet ASAP to try to win a few quid at the fishes expense.

TF_drawbag1967Why the hell would you want to use Braid as a hooklength, I landed a carp the other week and the whole of what would have been its bottom lip and jaw was ripped away, I can only think this was caused by Braid being used by young Carp anglers.

TF_dirkdiggleras per usual assumption etc,
i’ve played and landed hundreds and hundreds of carp of all sizes on 6lb specialist braid as a hooklength with no mouth damage at all FACT.
as such where permitted i will continue to do so. -

AnonymousWhere its allowed i use braid and totally agree with D.W. Potential issues arise when fish are deep hooked and then the fish are played badly. On the method feeder your only using 3-4 inches of braid for the hook length. So, its almost impossible to deep hook fish if the method is set up correctly. The reason i use braid hook lengths is because it gives perfect presentation.
Yes andy cranes mate. The hook length, including the hair if you want to use hard pellet, corn or boilies as hook bait.
I use Maxima NeutraSink braid.

TF_wiggley wormdrawbag1967 dont think and dont presume that it was braid at fault and dont go blaming the younger anglers for this ive seen anglers who should know better cranking fish in without even giving the fish a chance ~naughty
