TF_ebbwmiloGood luck Dave with the new venture!
On about leaving match fishing, Giles Cochrane has sold all his kit and packed the sport up to concentrate on other priorities. So all the best to him too.

TF_wightanglerSad to hear aboyt Dave H.- he really did take M/F to new heights and consolidated it’s customer and commercial consolidation in his editorship and brought many innovations and greatly revived the river match-fishing scene and the Evesham Festival amongst many other achievements, the Drennan Cup, going against sales trend needs by bothering to really highlight and personally support the English international team and fips events in coverage-a big well done!.
Greatly missed.Hope Stan Piecha is not the shoe-in! a retrograde step if so,imo.
And given the staggering influence David Hall now has re-advertisors, the trade and the growing noticeable imbalance of the ad.-customer-print balance favouring commercialism at expense of independent objectivity maybe good timing for Dave?
Despite a very high calibre youngish staff- can see that the revenue from commercial tie ins and placement will continue apace as is noticeable even on web forum platforms comparitive to a few years ago- this seems to mirror wider media and society sadly.
Whilst this process part inevitable-and despite having far superior kit – the consequences for genuine independence and criticism is more likely to be further constrained by commercial consideration and the closer relationship/seeming cronyism this brings.
Whilst, many in the business would probably accept this as price of progress and viabillity- fredom of speech and independence and the value of questioning are of far more substantive and long term value than narrow profit and commercial ‘necessity’ would assume.
Notwithstanding above process of which Dave would likely have little control,
Best wishes and a big thank you Dave Harrell. -

DaveHarrellParticipantThanks for the kind comments both on here and on facebook guys.
There’s nothing untoward in me moving on, I just fancy a change of direction after seven years working at DHP thats all.
I’m intending to move back to the Severn valley area as I have missed it ever since I left there and will be setting up a new business. And I certainly wont be giving up match fishing, just the magazine!
The magazine is in good shape now, as is the sister magazine Pole Fishing and Jon Arthur, Tom Scholey, Joe Carass and a new member of staff who will be starting soon I understand will, I am sure continue to produce great magazines in the future. I have enjoyed my time at the helm and its been a pleasure working with these guys. I also know they have some good ideas in place for the remainder of this year and beyond.
I will be launching my own website soon but in the meantime, thanks to everyone who has taken time out to write to me or call me over the past seven years. Without you guys there wouldnt be any magazines and your support and input has been appreciated. (Most of the time anyway! haha!) -

TF_JohnHGood luck Dave, I lived near the Severn Valley a few years back now and can understand why you want to move back.
Giles will be a massive loss to fishing if he has indeed packed up. I would rank him as the most thought provoking angler out there.
Nice bloke too as I had a charity day out with him last year. -

TF_Leaky Lloydspoke to giles earlier on facebook !!
its correct, he has quit and sold all his gear !!
says, he’s taken his fishing as far as he wanted to and has lost interest in matchfishing !!!
as those who know me best will testify,, i have done exactly that !!
done it twice now,, and for a 3rd time,, i came back to the sport i love,,, i may be wrong, but he may find it hard to quit and return !, once an angler,, always an angler !!!
its a bit like quitting smoking,, only they dont sell patches for it !!! LOL -

TF_scarfGood luck with the move and the new venture Dave.
As an ex 9to5 wage slave I admire your decision
to break out and do your own thing.
You only ever look back and regret the things you haven’t done in life. Do it while you can. -

Tubbs TubsonAll the best mate…
For the uninitiated, Dave has given many an angler a “leg-up” in the world; me being one of those who will be forever in his debt for this reason.
Top bloke and I wish you all the best.
