TF_geepsterParticipantContact Steve Rowland he was looking to put a Total-Fishing team in (I paid the deposit) but due to problems his end he left it late. I actually don’t know if he got a team together in the end….

TF_geepsterParticipantReading between the lines I think that Steve had some problems and his heart wasn’t in it. But yes, we can look to put a team together for 2012. What we need is a skipper/organiser who knows the venue….

TF_steve rGeeps, as you well know I’ve had some serious health problems of late but to say my heart wasn’t in it is totally wrong as I was targetting promotion this year. Of the 16 names I originally had 5 have said it would cost too much coming from the North, 3 have made other arrangements and 1 has booked a holiday [not mentioning any names!]. I couldn’t honestly see us finding 4 anglers now as there are other events on the same day ie ACA Masters which we have 2 teams of 6 in, the Maver MatchThis Final which a lot of people are attending and Pete Bailey’s stag do at Barston which I know a lot of TF people are attending.

TF_cormorantselfey, easy feller, before you go on about others what happened that EADAC did not fish the Div. 1 National?
A case of not throwing stones when living in a glass house……one local fishery manager told us that you couldn’t get a team to travel to the north for the match nor for practices…….how come?
my feeling nowadays is that match fishing is on a perilous down-slide and these examples show just how steep that slide is becoming.
I know how keen you are as a match angler and wish you all the success that you deserve.

TF_allyParticipantI cant that see finding 4 or even more anglers would have been a problem for Dave, I would have more than likely been one of them. I also know that he has been feeling frustated at not being able to get any information from anyone as he has been trying for weeks.
I myself responded to requests for any one interested in fishing this match, but never received a reply. -

TF_geepsterParticipantI didn’t know you had had health problems Steve. But I hope you are feeling better. It’s no big deal missing the National; I think we should really only be doing it if there is a lot of interest. Let’s see how it all looks next year… by which time there might only be one national anyway..

TF_joffmiesteri don’t know if this helps  we always plan around the National dates if its a venue colse to our area we will put as much time as we can into the event [as it still draws 63 teams of 10] if its a venue a long way away i will ask each and every angler if they want to fish at the start of the season we then put money aside for the national.i found if you leave everything until the last minute its very hard to get anglers to part with one the money and two the time.a last minute problems cannot be help as we found out this year having to loss a angler at the last minute ,but one is better than four .i feel for any captain as the chasing around you have to do often goes without credit or a well done 😉
if you ask at the start of the season who wants to fish anfd then give them the dates you should be half way there 😉 😉 its still the match to win 🙂 🙂 🙂
at least you will know how committed your anglers are, three of our anglers backed out this year and all three should of fished 🙁 🙁 -

TF_SelfeyI have run a team for over 20 years winter league and national.
You have to put a lot of effort in to get anglers to commit to travelling.
This was even with all expenses paid inc pools !!
The last time we fished the basey we were 2nd and had been in div 1 since but like all things the lads felt that it was time to call it a day.
I was hoping to be on the other side and just fish with no pressure. I was there again yesterday on the practice match even though Im not fishing the national now.
The point Im trying to make is that if Steve has health problems then someone should have lightend the burden on him so we would have had a team…
We could have got anglers in. -

TF_cormorantally, it goes to just how much apathy there is in match fishing nowadays when anglers just cannot be bothered to get up off ther a.s.s and do something. not even bothering to reply to others’ requests for completing teams for such matches as Nationals. i always wished that i had been good enough to fish one for any team. my saddest loss.
i am not sorry that i said goodbye to match fishing when i did because i believe it is now at an all-time low level with little hope of getting much better. call me a pessimist if anyone likes but i think i am a realist.
there are stll a few who are doing their utmost, like selfey etc. locally, but, they seem to be pushing their cause uphill all the way with many obstacles and little help.
i hope you are personally better now after your problems and hope to see you on the waters soon, if our paths cross.
best wishes,
peter. -

TF_joffmiestersome good points on this subject
1 i’m pretty sure most anglers are feeling it in the pocket when it comes to team fishing all for one and one for all team points come first its a big out lay money, where as going down the road to the local commercial is easy if you want to go on the morning you can if you don’t you stay in bed simple as [the fact you are still letting people down, its still easier to do than let the team down]
plus with extra costs on bills at home its easy to keep the wife happy by not spending any of the extra money on fishing than go and come back to all the ear ache
match fishing in general has a real uphill battle in the future as lots of anglers are turning to club fishing which are often 40 to 50 pegs now
big events are always supported well with big money prizes yet no new faces from the working class angler all well sponsored individuals that can put endless amounts of pellets and fishmeal G/B at any time or moment, fare play these anglers put the time in and might fish 3 or 4 times a week but this is also having a knock on effect on commercials as the working class angler now thinks he’s wasting his time trying to competing and doesn’t bother
i’m sure there are loads of match anglers out there that are not sure which direction to go in in the future and are sitting on the fence it’s a sad time for competitive fishing yet what goes around comes around and i’m sure and hope its sooner than later -

TF_allyParticipantDont think that you are being pessimistic Pete, where are the youngsters. 25 years ago or so your lad, whilst still at school won back to back winter leagues, but has probably not held a rod for 20 years or ever took his lad. Daves boy has hit the crumpet zone, will he come back to it only time will tell. Went for a walk round the local council lake the other day, no one fishing, in fact no youngsters there at all, at what was the local hangout for kids. Back in my youth you struggled for a peg and half my class went fishing, the other half, at the risk of being sexist were girls.

TF_cormorantally,
with you all the way.
it is a geat pity but what match fishing there is is getting too expensive and too bloody serious for me at 73. must admit i miss the old club match sundays with the craic going from the moment you arrived to going home…laugh a minute with those original cormorants.
still, as they say, that is progress!! more like regress to me.
realist cormorant, rave over. :p
