Sunday 26th February – Goodiford Mill Open
Twenty six anglers from Torbay, Newton Abbot & Exeter fished a warm up match for the forthcoming Angling Times supercup competition where local teams Exeter, Jinx & Torbay Match Group will compete for a chance to to go through to the southern regional semi-final. With the mild weather during the week and forecast for the day the same, prospects were good and a peg with a bar was what everyone was hoping for before the draw. In the end the weather was probably too good with no ripple on the water and bright sunshine throughout only a few anglers managed to keep fish coming throughout the six hour duration.
Torbay’s Steve Ball had a terrific catch for February totalling 141lb – all carp taken on the waggler fishing over a bar, he used an 8mm banded pellet over loosefed 8mm coarse pellet. In total he managed to land 39 carp and caught regularly throughout the match to take home £110.
Exeter’s Dave Sellick was cursing 15 lost carp that could have given him the win but the £90 prize was a good consolation in coming second overall. He drew end peg 49 which isn’t used often but with a sunken bar and far bank cover had plenty of options. He caught from the start and regularly throughout on the waggler at various depths for a total weight of 127lb.
Third place was Zac Newton (Team ALS) with a catch of 110lb from the ever reliable peg 2 which won him £50. Fishing on the shallow bar and over the back of it at depth he only caught in short bursts but had some big fish to 12lb – all on 8mm course pellet he fed around 1.5pints during the match. There were three section winners each taking home £30; Section A – Martin Tyler (Torbay Match Group); Section B – Mark Rose (Torbay Match Group); Section C – Chris Witham
