Twenty Four Exeter members fished the first round of the http://www.victoriaproducts.co.uk league at the associations Kia-Ora fishery in Cullompton on Sunday the 15th of January. The match was originally intended to be a silver fish only competition but with such a mild winter so far keeping the carp active the decision was made to allow them to count. It seemed as though the weather mocked this change due to sudden temprature drop this week with frosts in the run up to the match. All the talk at the draw was how badly this might effect the sport and wether silvers might come back into play for some important league points.
On the day everyone struggled for bites with nine anglers not managing to catch anything, even silver fish were very hard to come by. First place went to Gary Thornton (Team ALS) who made the most of the tempremental backwater draw of peg one, he never hid a bite on the pole and having thought it could be spooking the fish changed to small waggler cast down the gulley baited with double red maggot. This proved to be a great decision – despite only managing six carp he never lost a fish and the weight of 12kg 750g was enough to take the top prize of £80 and 10 league points. Second on the day from peg twenty eight was Eddie Evans (Team Jinx), he caught 5 carp on the method feeder with a banded pellet cast tight to the island bushes. Third on the day was Brian Sussex, drawn on peg twenty four he cought fishing the pole at 10 metres against the sunken cage taking 4 carp and some silvers on 6m expander pellet over micro pellet for a total weight of 7kg 900g winning £38 and 10 league points.
The three sections winners taking £15 home were: Wayne Mitchel (Team Jinx) on peg 21 took section A by default with 7kg, Zac Newton (Team ALS) on peg 26 took section B by default with 7kg 700g, C Section was won by Mark Whetnall (Team Jinx) from peg 19 with 3kg 950g.
After the first round the league standing is: 1st, Gary Thornton (Team ALS) 10pts, 2nd Brian Sussex 10pts, 3rd Mark Whetnall (Team Jinx) 10pts, 4th Eddie Evans (Team Jinx) 8pts, 5th Wayne Mitchell (Team Jinx) 8pts, 6th Paul Marks (EAC) 8pts, 7th Zac Newton (Team ALS) 6pts, 8th Kingsley Davis (Team Jinx) 6pts, 9th Roly Palmer (Team Jinx) 4pts, 10th Paul Ware 4pts, 11th Paul Elworthy 2pts, 12th Dave Walton 2pts. The next round of the Victoria Products League will be on Sunday the 5th of February on the Tiverton Canal.
