I’ve had a Rive Carbon RX Blue (2003) for a while now and never had any problems with the knobs until reciently. Last month one of the legs stuck on the box and I couldn’t tighten or loosen the knob – it just kept slipping both ways.

I had to order a Rive Frame insert and Knob to fix the problem after I managed to twist and prise the leg off the box with a bit of help from some WD40.

I couldn’t seperate the old Frame insert from the old knob even when off the box so it is now useless. I unscrewed all 6 knobs off my Rive and applied a little WD40 to the threads on the inserts to prolong the life of the other knobs.

2 weeks ago the same thing happened another leg, this time the leg is secured pretty tight and it’s going to be a mission even getting the leg off the box nevermind the knob and frame insert.

Is this the common problem with the RIVE knobs? Does it happen all D25’s eventually? and are the custom Rive knobs a fix for this problem?

I’ve had 2 of mine do the same here David….mind you they were old and I never oiled them
The little treaded insert in the knob had come loose from the inside
I got a few extra inserts and bits last time I got some gear here and kept a spray of oil in there every now and again. Never had the problem since

            Hi David,

I had the same problem, it seems to be reasonably common. The knob on my box failed, it decided to spin on the spot, and wouldn’t tighten onto the leg – typically while fishing a lake where you had to wade out into the water.

Anyhow, the knob should easily come off, and leave a circular brass bolt type fitting on the thread – this is easily removed with a pair of mole grips/pliers.

There is another thread on this forum titled ‘Rive Knobs’. Have a read of that thread, there is a guy who makes a set of aluminum anodised black knobs as a replacement for the standard plastic Rive knobs. I bought a set of the aluminum knobs, and would recommend them to anyone.

            Hope this helps.
            James

Contact NDM3108 and order some of his ali knobs.

These are seriosuly top drawer and a must for any Rive owner, you will never have the problem again and they are machined from a single piece of ali so will never fall apart. I wouldnt be without mine.

I couldn’t seperate the knob from the frame insert last time I tried but i’ll try a bit more force next time. Your right, it seems like the plastic knob isn’t gripping the circular brass bolt anymore but is still well attached and doesn’t want to come apart.
