In my very short time makign my own floats, I think is is more about getting a smooth finish to your float body before painting as opposed to getting a smooth paint. I find that using a good sanding sealer beforehand on the bare balsa, then some fine sanding after the first coat, followed by another coat should give a very smooth surface prior to painting mate.

          Hope this helps.

definately the sandpaper must be an extremely fine grade to get a good finish, not B& Q cr*p

there’s some good advice there. Irrespective of the paint you use, if its a badly prepped base, then no paint will get it back to a smooth finish…it is well worth spening teh time and effort getting the balsa smooth before applying a topcoat and varnish.
