hi, prepared a kg of hemp last week ,boiled till the shells opened and then cooled under cold water immediately, put straight into food bags and froze, yesterday i was using the hemp for feeding and noticed quite a lot was failing to sink,i had defrosted it the night before, i had put the hemp into a 2 pint bait tub before starting fishing and some of it had dried slightly in the heat as the day went on, the hemp i had left over in the food bags seemed to sink ok, how does everbody keep there hemp when on the bank to overcome this floating on top (the activity on the top of the lake was great to see but not when it had drifted away from my peg) , i am correct in freezing the hemp immediately in bags if not using it, thanks in advance ,Dave.

Your cooking was right but I’d let it cool naturally in its own juices before bagging and freezing. Freeze in 1 pint batches and defrost over night as required. On the bank keep in a cool bag and only take out what you need and keep it wet as it will float when it dries. Any unused hemp in your cool bag can be re-frozen without problem.

ditto above i always keep my hemp in water on the bank to stop it drying out.if it does dry out it will float.

I would agree with oggy if i was fishing for silvers. Hemp water can be a great additive in ground bait for attracting silvers in to a peg. The oils and cloudy water can also help in ttracting silvers in to your peg. However, on commercial carp venues. I believe its better to flush your hemp in cold water and remove as much of the loose bits of pith and the oils before freezing. The reason why i flush all the loose bits of pith and the loose oils after cooking is to reduce the number of line bites and foul hooked carp. Hemp on commercial carp venues is used as a holding feed for fishing on the deck. The last thing i want in this situation is loads of oils and hemp pith floating around in mid water and bringing the carp up in the water.

Transport your hemp to your peg still frozzen. Put the hemp in a large bait box full of lake water and leave it to defrost. It will be ready for use in less than 15 minutes. Just leave your hemp in water and it will not float.
