TF_jimbo25I have a match here in 3 weeks time. I have read the web site and reports but it doesn’t really give too much away on tactics, bait etc. Can anybody fill me in on the usual approach needed.
I have never fished there before and as its my 1st club match of the year I would like to get off to a good start if possible. Any info would be much appreciated -

TF_ziggy169It’s fished hard recently because of the frosts, with mainly skimmers making up the match weights. If your match isn’t for a few weeks it should have improved a bit by then, I’ll post again in a couple of weeks and let you know what sort of weights are coming out and methods.

TF_C_S_HZiggy, I’ve heard there has been a significant restocking at Packington Somers.
What has gone into Big Gearys?

TF_ziggy169C_S_H, I know Molands had a restocking of 1000 F1’s recently in the 1lb to 3lb range. Not sure what, if anything went into Gearys. I’m over there this weekend so I’ll ask for you. Are you due to fish it soon?

TF_C_S_HHi Ziggy,
I have Big Gearys booked for the 25 March and 15 April for Attleborough Sports AC. We fish it every year as part of our 10 match Spring League. There will be about 25 – 30 of us, perhaps a few too many for the venue.
In all fairness it usually throws up the goods to the anglers that have a flexible approach. Usually won on the method, straight lead or pole for skimmers depending on the day.
Reason I was asking about stocking is I know they like their F1’s at Packington and if they’ve added these to Big Gearys in any number it might change the way the venue fishes. -

why not ask some of the Ridgemere lads, most of them know how to fish all of the lakes at Packington

I think you might find its a different Ridgemere. We are Ridgemere “black caps” and fish Sundays. I believe the other Ridgemere fish on Saturdays and I don’t know them.

TF_James_HHi Jimbo,
I used to fish Packington 3 times a week so know the lakes relatively well, although it’s changed a fair bit over last few years. I drink in the same pub as many of the open regulars so keep in touch with the results etc – if I remember correctly peg 23 won it on Saturday with 70lb odd on the pole, although it was Lee Richards who is a different class of angler. 2nd was Andy Findlay with 65lb odd from peg 21 (I think).
With this warmer weather the fish will move into the shallows (pegs 20 to 26). 60-70lb seems to win most matches at the moment. Straight lead and bread has won a couple of matches recently, from various pegs. Pole and pellet will get you plenty of bites although method/striaght lead is often the winning method.
Your best bet would be to phone the fishery, all of the baliff’s are very helpful and will give you up to date match reports. There are matches on Gearys Tuesday/Thursday/Sat/Sun so plenty of upto date info available.
Hope this is of some help.
James
