Why would you want to? Eyed hooks are better for this!

The original ‘hair rigs’ were exactly that, made of hair. To make them, the hair was laid alongside the hook shank and the hooklength was tied in the normal way with a spade end whipping knot trapping the hair at the same time. You can do exactly the same using whatever hair material you want.

One advantage is that you can use a lighter hair than hook length or a braid hair but a nylon hooklength.

You can hair rig with spade end hooks but its very difficult to get the right sized hair and it takes lots of practice to get it right. I use to use spade end hooks for hair rigging before there was enough choice in eyed hooks.

Make your loop in the hair or add a band or bait spike to the end of the line. Then, do your spade end knot as normal but you have to think about how much line you have to work with for whipping around the shank of the hook and getting though the loop to the spade end knot. Its very fiddly to get it right but easier if your leaving a longer hair length. You need to work out how long the line is that your doing the whipping with and how many turns of line you want to create the knot. Almost impossible if you want the hook bait right next to the bend of the hook as there is almost no line to complete the knot.

It’s not worth the bother most hook patterns you would use for feeder / hair rigging come in both eyed and spade so use eyed. Also when using short hook lengths on the method there is a lot more pressure on the hook length and a spade can at times cut into the line (not good) especially if your line goes behind the spade. All in all stick with eyed hooks and keep it simple.

You can tie a hair rig using any material you like with an eyed hook the hair does not have to be formed using the mainline its simple enough to do on reasonably sized hooks.
