Has the ever increasing price of petrol had any impact upon your fishing? Do you travel less for fishing, fish more locally due to rising petrol costs?

it is and has been for quite some time
the most expensive part of my fishing.
living in the poo hole of the country (oldham)
the nearest decent fishing is partridge lakes.
this journey with traffic usually takes from 1 hour 20 mins to 2 hours as the match draw time means we have to travel in the slow hour (shame really as if it was drawn earlier it takes us 40 mins)
our other favourite venue larford at stourport is between 2 and 3 hours traffic dependant.
with petrol now an outrageous £5.80 a gallon (and going up again)i can see larford being more of a rarity than it was last year.

has done for some time??????? as the loss of fish stocks due to diseased fisheries down south, which hasnt been restocked due to the particular disease . Some of these fisheries dont acknowledge the problem or even accept it happened .Both these points ADD TO CERTAIN FISHERIES HAVING VERY POOR ATTENDANCES 5 OR 6 FOR A OPEN adding tothe demise of match fishing even one england star couldnt raise the attendance ps he blanked as well

It will without doubt give the solo traveller cause to reconsider travelling to some venues. For the fishing buddies it is still a reasonable impact but not quite so limiting.

The loners will have to make some friends

Diesel at £1.30 a litre even at supermarkets it’s going to affect more than the cost of fishing.

This year may see some of the not so good fisheries go to the wall, and from a sporting point of view the chaff needs to be cut. There are far too many poorly run fisheries that are diluting the sport and quality of the fishing.

It would do more if I travelled to fish, but I’m lucky as there’s many good venues in the Peterborough area, so I rarely have more than a 20 mile round trip.

It has me for the last 12 months or so, I used to do 120 mile round trip to Lindholme every week and also 100 mile round trip to Woodlands/Oaks every other week so that was 680 miles a month. Now I do 15 miles a week to a local fishery with the odd trip further afield maybe once a month. I drive a 2.7 litre 4×4 as I live out in the sticks and I don’t have any friends to share the cost with. 🙁

The cost of travel has certainly impacted on my club and for some years now we have considered the distance to venues when booking our matches. That said living in south yorkshire we are lucky to have a a good variety of venues within 20 miles or so.

I use to be a regular at Cudmore twice each week for several years. 130 miles round trip each time. Not so bad as it was almost all motorway. Now its just to expensive to travel those distances as regular. In the last few years. I,ve either stayed very local (under 60 miles round trip)(Closest commercial venue to me is 22 miles away). Or, i fish less often and have the odd day at a long distance venue. Also, started doing 2 or 3 day club events and stay in a local guest house to the venue over night.

Used to travel to Makins for the winter leagues, a round trip of 2 1/2 hours. Now I go on the Fossdyke, a round trip of 40 minutes! Petrol was just one of the factors that made me change, but it’s still the best decision I made.

Just read between the lines on this one lads,if you drive a company car then mileage can be massaged!2 or 3 small journeys a week to pick up spares or meet other engineers can add up to 100 extra miles at the end of the week, dont do this myself of course but have heard that it happens~shh

last year stafford moor (200 mile r/t) no problem . now out of the question. same as internet matches fished west drayton last week cost me £40 fuel so not many trips this year. cant see anything changing as most of the money from the £6 a gallon goes to H/M, and they need all the cash to keep the bankers afloat and the imigrants in benifits, not to mention the legal aid shysters working the human rights fiasco. mind you it aids conjestion with only the middle/upper classes able to afford trips so solves the traffic problem. but! H/M will have to raise taxes and make cuts to make up the short fall.so no change there then~sick ~sick ~sick

I definitely drive slower to save fuel when I go fishing these days. A steady 70 on the motorway is a bit of a pain (it’s a lot easier at 85+ in the outside lane) but you don’t have to watch out for police and you get there almost as quickly.
I’m becoming a boring fart according to my kids.

You want to thank yourself lucky you don’t work for a certain German company. We have trackers in all engineers vehicles or anyone using a company vehicle, and any discrepancies are gone over with a fine tooth comb. Anyone caught fiddling mileage and defrauding the company no matter how slight is out the door.

There is one division that has them plumbed into the Engine management and it records breaking accelerating and speeds into and out of corners, along with all journey info, including sitting ticking over.

I now do a conservative 55 to 59 mph on all journeys where the legal limit allows, and even on motorways bimble along. Our health and safety is used both ways, no works calls taken whilst driving no excessive speeding to reduce Co2 footprint etc. Still get to sites early enough to complete the work within a working day and get home to have tea 90% of the time which is 15% better than my yearly target!

More and more companys are fitting trackers and it seems more and more companys are looking at journey times. One of our new rules now is that if you are more than 2hours from home you must stay out. When working at places like royal london hospital,i just stay till 8 at night and then its an hour and a bit to get home.As you say though those without trackers are lucky nowadays, long may it continue.

It is not really the fuel as an isolated cost is it…? It surely must be the fuel on top of everything else… so mainly it is just the UK economy (closely followed by our own) going down the drain…

Personally I look at fuel as the cost of doing business just like bait. If I need to do a long drive – I do the drive, if need the right bait and the right amount of bait I bring it… or stay at home..

I won’t travel further than about 25 minutes. I used to travel upto ~1 1/2 hours. Cost and age are the major contributers.

I think the cost of travel has also contributed significantly to the devaluation of fisheries over the last 18 months.

Not yet! 60 miles each way is local to me and in summer regularly go over 200 miles each way for big matches, sometimes up to 360 miles each way!

Our club matches are all a lot closer to ‘home’ now (South Yorkshire) and the trips to Drayton, Boddington, etc are no longer in demand. I think our club rule is all venues within a 1 hour drive of Sheffield.

Still a long way for me to go though now that I live in London!
