        This may be an interesting topic and prompt a few other “how its made” questions and hopefully explanations. To kick things off I have always wondered how shot is made, in particular how they are all mass produced to exactly the same weight and how the cut is made in them ~think ~think

          never had a pot of shot yet where they are all spot on the same size!! Same goes with pole floats.

            i think shot is still made in the same way its allways been done

              Liquid lead is poured onto a sieve and the droplets that pass through the sieve make the shot. Probably not quite that simple but near enough to explain the principle. The split would be machine cut/punched as lead is very soft compared to other metals.

                Neil is correct, and when they were using loads of shot for warfare and production was at its height they built special shot towers. After dropping the shot from the top, it is then caught in a water basin to cool it and stop it being damaged.

                    i have seen shot being made on old forging m/cs (used for putting heads on screws)m/cs had being clevely modified coils of wire fed into m/c cut of into segments then forged with 2 blows one which shapes it round then the other puts the cut in
