As a recent convert to latex from hydro can any uses advise on how long they leave this in their top kits? With my hydro it was obvious when it was shot as you could feel it roughening up. However I never had it break on me like my latex did last night. Good job I was pleasuring as it was a lump that did me!!

All my garbolino latex(white pure 14s) from last season is shot, had 2 topkits of the stuff snap in 2 weeks, give it a sharp tug and it snaps easily…

Going back to black hydro in most of my kits and a couple of latex…..

I am using the Maver stuff but have bought some new Garbo to put in. I am starting to have second thoughts as I cant be bothered re elasticating 2 or 3 times a season.
Performance wise its brilliant and is also light but breakages cant be tolerated.
I am sure I used some black hydro for 3 years and never had a breakage.

Ive used Garbo 12 and 14/16 latex at Mallory for 4 years and swear by the stuff, i elasticate my tops just before it opens in June and rip it out and bin it at the end of September, when they stop pulling so hard.

Ive never had it snap and at £1.50 per topkit its cheap enough to do this.

I wouldnt trust any solid laggy after a seasons use because they all deteriorate after time, only a tight git like Kev would expect 5 years out of a £1.50 length of rubber lololol

Does it deteriorate on the spool because you never know how old it is when you buy it?

Not sure but i think most laggys have a slight coating of something in their packets

I use normal solid elastic, not pure latex and have had some in about 15 years! Don’t fish the pole that much though!

I swopped from black hydro to double 8 Latex and found I could get fish under control quicker, especially at the netting stage. I had it snap after a few matches, so I renewed it and checked it every time out, however it broke again at the pull bung end. Back on black hydro now which never breaks even when frayed.

It’s using the pull bung that’s damaging the elastic!

No I don’t think so, it snaps on the knot on the pull bung end. The knot doesn’t have any strain on it when pulling the elastic. I think latex can snap before it shows signs of wear & tear.

I do not use puller kits so mine did not break due to that. I think it broke about half way down the top kit so suspect it may have been damaged whilst stored with the kit folded. I checked the elastic that I had left in and it was fine.

have used hydro since it first came out , never had any snap and some of it in some of my top kits is 5 or 6 years old. for me its the most reliable and value for money elastic out there .

I am concluding in my own mind that latex is not durable when 10lb plus fish are around. Its perfect for smaller fish. Back to hydro for me unless its smaller fish only.
