match fishing ettiquete

Fishing my local over55s matches over the last three weeks i have found myself playing the same fish as someone else on each match.
The first time i landed the fish ” a 6 pound carp” the second time the other competitor landed the fish “a 5 pound fish” and the third time it fell to me to land it ” a 6 pound fish” We each kept and weighed the fish as ours but is there a rule or gentlemans agreement on what should happen in these situations?.

Your tackle (or competitors) should be halfway, at most between, pegs so if you hook his tackle (and fish) or visa versa, and land it then it is the fish of the one who lands it, imho.

Fish 0.25 and land everything after a ‘tug of war’ though! lol

On a more serious note: If the venue too tightly pegged or is everyone fishing really fine for the conditions?

I think I’ve only had this problem once or twice.

The fish belongs to whose tackle it’s attached to i.e. If its on your hook it’s your fish – the gentlemans agreement may come in to play as to who actually lands the fish but then should give the fish to who’s hook is in it surely :confused:

I agree and to take it further if someone hooks a fish and informs the guy on the next peg that it is heading towards him then imo ettiquette says that person should either lift their tackle out if on the pole or be ready to give line if on the tip.

In the world champs if the fish goes out of your peg limit then that fish has to be returned to the water. However when fishing at distance on a feeder and large carp kiting left or right then there is little that can be done and we never use that rule on the matches that I fish.

I fished a match last year when 2 anglers both had a hook in an 18lb carp both hooks were in mouth, there was an angler in the middle of them and he landed the fish as neither angler could gain any line on the fish,he then gave it to the guy on the right of him who claimed he had hook it first, he then weight the fish in. what is the ettiquete for that.

My mate lost his top 5 on front deans, he walked up the lake following the pole the angler on 34 said he would cast over it with his bomb rod and retrieve it but only if he could keep the fish as it was a match and to help out would be wasting his precious fishing time !hows that for ettiquete ?

sounds fair to me! once you have moved from your peg you loose claim over the fish anyway as the fish has to be landed in you own peg. also the guy was doing him a favour to retrieve prob £300 worth of section and the time wasted may have cost the angler helping framing or winning so to keep the fish that he would of landed in his peg is prob not unfair. not sure if it is in the spirit of things but would say its a fair result for both anglers not sure about the rest of the anglers a bit of a grey area!!

Its not my cup of tea, I would have just helped him get his pole back,put the fish back and then carry on fishing.I certainly wouldnt have requested that I got the fish as a good will gesture for helping out, The general feeling around the lake that day was mixed some said he didnt need to lay claim to the fish for helping out and others said he deserved the fish for his inconvenience, a hung jury ?

yea mate i agree it would be 50:50 if anglers were asked! like i said its a grey area! i personally will always try and help anybody out you never know one day it could be my pole being dragged round the lake.

I fish alot of matches at Earlswood and Boddington and it happens quiet often that a fish goes straight through the line of somebody on the next peg.All we do is let the line go slack and let the other person play the fish in.This is something that we all agree with and never claim another anglers fish

Must have been a Daiwa!
Surely deliberately hooking a top set is the same as foul hooking a fish.it shouldn’t count.

Bearing in mind this is 11 years ago, yes my mates pole was a Diawa, a 210 tournement the One with the Yellow graphics and yes the guy really did want the fish attached to help him out, Hope hes not reading this or Im dead !

At whiteacres in a festival 4 years ago i was on peg 12 on trelawney. The angler on 16 hooked a carp and his top 5 came off. It eventually came in front of me at which point i cast across it, got the top kit and netted the fish, an 8lb plus mirror. I then returned the fish as to me it didnt sit right as i had deliberately cast across the pole to retrieve it for the other angler. I went onto weigh a massive 10oz and finish last in the section. A lot of people said to me afterwards i should have put the carp in my net but for me if you deliberately cast across a pole or rig then the fish shouldnt count.

Totally agree Carpmagic,some years ago i had a top three come off in a match,a mate? retreaved it when it went past him,unhooked the fish and put it in his net,he ended up being in the money by the weight of that fish.I have seen it happen on more than one occasion,its the human condition.If there are ways to cheat some will and some wont.Some call it gamesmanship,i call it cheating.

I was fishing a notable bagging water in Oxfordshire a few years ago and the guy on the next peg lost the top 6 of his brand spanking new Airity, he got in a boat, screwed up about 8 peoples pegs in the process which to be fair we were ok with as nobody wants to see another angler suffer that kind of loss. The problem was when he eventually got his top 6 back he landed the 15lber on the end and weighed it in, at the point he landed it he wasnt even in his own peg but on the other side of the lake.

Total joke that is IMHO, if other anglers have let you row through thier swims and dredge about with a hook on stick the least you should do is return the fish !

I cannot believe the attitude of some people. How could you look other anglers in the eye afterwards after weighing in a fish that was hooked on someone else’s gear or landed from a boat the other side of the lake.

Having said that I suppose that we bring it on ourselves by letting people get away with it.

When I ran matches I experienced a day with the carp spawning and the guy next to me was fishing right in amongst the spawning fish in 6 inches of water. Our platforms were being covered with water and spawn as the fish went about their business. I told him that as far as I was concerned he was deliberately trying to foulhook fish and I would disqualify him if he didn’t stop. His reply was that he was getting bites as his float was going under :confused: As the fish were flying around the pegs at 30 mph that wasn’t surprising really. In the end I told him thatas of that time no one was allowed to fish within 3 metres of the bank and then went round the lake having to tell everyone else of the new rule. Most accepted it but there were one or two whiners. Matchmen eh?
