TF_jonojust read on another match fishing forum that all the 2011 maver pairs have now been cancelled by angling times due to lack of ticket sales.
nothing to do with maver aparently, they are sponsors not organisers.
ive booked on 2 matches already , wonder if i will get a refund?

TF_JohnCANGLING TIMES CANCEL PAIRS TOURNAMENT
Maver Managing Director, Phil Briscoe, expressed his profound disappointment at the loss of such a high profile, prestigious event.
Phil said-
‘We are extremely saddened at the demise of the Angling Times / Maver Pairs tournament which also qualified the finalists to compete in the following day’s Maver British Pole Pairs Championship.
On reflection, after Angling Times decision to cancel their participation in both finals and all the national qualifiers, we have decided to continue our support and run the British Pole championship as a stand alone premier event.
The Pole Championship will no longer be a pair’s match, but an individual challenge. Sunday August the 14th 2011 will see an angler crowned Maver British Pole Champion and walk away with a significant cash prize and a top level Maver pole which will present the winner with a prize fund of around £5,000!
It has been decided that the top five anglers from every Match This qualifier will now automatically receive an invitation to the Maver British Pole Championships, with no entry charge applicable other than pools money on the day.

TF_Waveney OneWell done to Maver but sad times at the Angling Times.

TF_geepsterParticipantOkay.
First this tells me that match angling is struggling.
Second it tells me Maver are backing match fishing events, despite recent disappointments.
Thirdly it makes me think that Angling Times aren’t, unless there’s more in it for them.
Maybe someone from AT can get on the forum and tell me why I have it all wrong….

TF_the margin gnomeI was told by a member of Angling Times staff that ‘their jobs are about selling newspapers not
running matches’. Shame they dont see it all going hand in hand. Lets hope Maver have luck in their Match This venture. -

trickyHas this been an overnight off the cuff decision???
If not and it has been on the cards for sometime then can somebody tell me why the Angling Times designated a half a page to this event in yesterdays publication???
The Angling Times cannot lose money on this event, so why cant they continue with???
If their excuse is (as previously posted) that they are there to sell papers and not run matches are they going to do the same with the County Chamionships points system??~think ~think ~think -

TF_respectSounds to me like a Kop out by Angling Times,us match anglers are a fickle bunch and if they rock the boat and upset us regular readers how many weekly papers will they sell then?
If Phil Briscoe can still support match fishing an these hard economic times then why cant Angling Times?
I dont think they are going to get my hard earned this week!!!

Maver is just the sponsor, they have nothing more to do with this event. It’s run and organised by the Angling Times, it all boils down to ticket sales according to Mark Sawyer.

TF_Daiwa proNot really suprised to be honest, there is a million and one competitions going on and hardly any run to full potensial. Just run 1 big event and do it 100% right.
-
07/04/2011 at 7:47 am #137226
TF_sawyerRight chaps, Calm down a bit, whats the point of having a witch hunt ? The simple fact is that ticket sales are not there this year. I dont know why ? it has nothing to do with Maver, but match anglers are not wanting it. Fact is, that if the numbers were there it would still be on.
As for some of the other comments on here. Well i am just astounded and so disapointed. Angling Times has supported the Winter League forever, runs Supercup for the clubs, and despite early teething problems the County Champs is hugely popular, has a brillaint paye-out for no entry fee, and is unlike anything else in its stature that this country has ever seen. -
07/04/2011 at 10:01 am #137229
TF_geepsterParticipantI think AT have done really good things with the County Champs Mark, but like the man said, the Pairs is still being advertised so it is a bit odd.
-
07/04/2011 at 10:30 am #137234
TF_sawyerGareth, nothing odd mate. The paper as you know works a week in advance, and although we knew ticket sales were poor, and hung on and on hoping that they would rally a bit. Unfortunatley there comes a point in time when a decision no matter how painfull, must be made. We are as gutted about it as anyone else, but the numbers just arent there.
Sign of the times maybe ? -

TF_LiquidizedHow blind are we match anglers?
Apart from the County Champs the “Big Event Matches” are self-funding; the entrants are fully funding them
To move forward the “Big Events Matches” need sponsoring properly, not a company or compamies running it claiming to sponsor it when in fact they are actually making money from it
The “Big Event Matches” can then be run at minimal cost to the angler (say just pools money & peg fee) which surely would provide better consistant turnouts
Match angling will never move forward with self funding, proper sponsorship is needed
-
07/04/2011 at 12:06 pm #137238
TF_geepsterParticipantI don’t think match anglers are blind I think we can see when something is being run for profit and pulled because it’s no longer making one. I agree though that proper sponsorship is needed to keep high profile events going – but the sponsor needs a palpable return – publicity is the key – and these days that’s not just on page.

TF_Vince8Happens all the time, organisers taking so called entrance etc fees and pocketing the cash. I don’t mind organisers taking a bit to cover their time and costs but some of the money involved is getting too much.
Transparency is needed so people know at the outset where their hard earned cash is going.
-
07/04/2011 at 3:00 pm #137258
tournament_profirst year every match was sold out in a flash pretty much
anglers did the maths and every year less and less enter until its now game over
Fish-o is a hell of a lot more transparent and people are still fighting for tickets so its not as if people got ‘bored’ of the actual competition
Simples, people like to know where their money is going!!!
put the numbers on a sheet showing where it all goes and I would bet anything you will get more attendees coughing up their hard earned wonga

Totally agree. I made the point very early on in the competition that the sums added up very poorly for the participating angler.
I was the victim of poor organisation in the first year when host fisheries were allowed to apply their own rules as to qualification and my partner and I missed out on what I felt should have been a qualifying spot due to dubious qualification criteria at a particular venue.
In the 2nd year we finished one out of the qualifying positions but found out later on through the grapevine that one of the qualifying pairs in our event were unavailable for the final and Angling Times had supposedly been trying to contact us to allow us to take their place (they hadn’t). I took the initiative to call A.T myself and was fed a load of half baked stuff about how they had been trying to contact me but it was now too late as the match had been pegged (several weeks before the final !).
That was my lot and I am not surprised based on my experiences that it has fallen by the wayside.

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantI fished this competition last year at Lindholme and i cant speak highly enough about the event it was well run and fair pegging any decent angler could have won from any peg except me …….. as for costs administration costs are administration costs simple the next time the bank charge you 35 quid for a letter that costs pennies to produce remind yourselves of administration costs !!!

TF_matt hainesi said to a couple of my mates last year that with so many big events and a new event starting this year that something would have to give way! I had a feeling it would be the pairs! big shame as i enjoy fishing pairs matches. i was gonna send my money off this week prob like most at the mo i book tickets for these big matches when i get some spare cash! ( hence im out once a month lol ) thanks to mark and the team for ur efforts over the last few years organising the event, hopefully you will come up with something for the future.

TF_Bear361ParticipantMaybe it is the sign of the times, a thread recently asked about what you are doing about fishing and the soaring costs of petrol/diesel. I usually enter the Maver Pairs along with any Fisho`s I can get tickets for but I have held off this year because I can`t really afford the price for the whole day, mainly due to petrol costs and if I`m honest unless no one else turns up I`m never really going to win as I`m just an ordinary anler compared to most who fish so now, this year I have chosen a local venue to me, 5 minutes down the road, not much in the petrol costs and I`m starting to get a feel for the place and win a bit of coin, unfortunately untill I personally can afford these bigger matches my money gets spent local, ie £40 to enter a Maver pairs match, maybe £15/£20 on bait £30 on diesel food and maybe a pint say another £10 thats £100 with most likely just a fond memory and no money back in my pocket, where as if I stay local I can fish possibly 3 matches and still have change from £100 plus I may win a section? Just my thoughts on it, shame because I enjoyed the Maver Pairs and fished next to some great anglers and I managed to get some good tips off them.

MongloidYou would have thought that this kind of match would be created for the benefit and promotion of the “Match Angler” and the sport of “Match Fishing”. I dont think it was. I think it was created purely for profit ( massive profit ). Shame on the creators !
Glad to see everyone has seen sense at last.
Vote with your feet!
And dont tell me that the organisers of a certain other competition have upped their prize money, before you do the maths on this one and see how much extra they are raking in.
For those of you who dont own a calculator :-
2080 x £2 = £4160
170 x £25 = £4250
Total
£8410
