Take a look at Stewart listers very informative blog.

He fishes the place most weeks in matches and writes up his findings!!

          http://www.fishing4fun.co.uk – “Stewarts Blog”

Janet the owner of Mawgan Porth also has a web site where all match results can be found:

          http://www.mawganporthpools-lake.co.uk

Hope this helps, any questions please ask i have fished the place a little to.

it’s a prayer mat you need, some lads fished it in the week, had a knock up 22lb won.

Go to Gwinear instead, far better

To be honest winning weights have been lower this week, average winning weight is around 60-70lb.
This is down to the number of anglers fishing it, for example tomorrows match is a sell out!!!

Stewart Lister managed a mid 200lb winning weight last week tho!!~clap ~clap

                  MAWGAN PORTH – awesome
I would take 4pts of casters and a little corn and only fish margin left and right on a Preston short-stop with 14-16 hollow with 0.1gr short Wilkinson float to 0.15 line direct to a 18 or 16

Have fished it last for the last 3 years at this time of the year. Fishing 3 matches in the week on average . HAVE NOT BEEN OUT OF THE TOP-3 in last 3 years for a 9 match total. Last year took 201 lb for a win in same week had 170 and 147.

But the real Top men are Stew Lister ,Harry Billing and Andy Partridge.

The fish get fishery pellets all year and the change to caster is spot on .
The water will go clear a little as the days get cooler so try fishing out with a short or long 4 to a Short stop. Sometimes fishing only 3 inch depth feeding caster on a top 4 is a good method.

With the greatest of respect Dr Phil ITS ALL CHANGED DOWN THERE.

I would read Stewarts blog as i suggested above, to gain up to date info on the place.

Casters and maggot approach will be out fished by pellet and paste, too many nuisance silvers now on smaller baits.

Fish are harder to come by, its not all top kit work anymore, in better attended matches most fish have backed off the short line (unless on a real flyer) seeking sanctuary in any weed out in front (selected pegs)

The fish do not queue up on one line for the bait as of old, the angler needs to fish many lines all over the swim to keep them coming. Big weights are still achievable at Mawgan but more thought has to be applied by the angler!!!!

You will need a pole down there now.

Wow ! …..respect Simon , did not realise how quick the water has changed. For 3 years i went it was always margin work.

It is not the same as it was , Stevie wonder could catch there at top kit bla bla bla, but not any more .Had a few results there myself but as crafty tafty says go to gwinear, its not the same place it was. I fished there in May and packed in after an hour, no point in staying cos u cant catch up!!! Im not saying its no good but as previous posts say more thought is needed g/luck.

                          TF_Stewart

Personally I think it is still a superb water and all the better when its not just a top kit down the side. The fishing has changed this year, more thought is needed, surely that is a good thing?
There are days when the margins still cannot be beaten Wayne Panting recorded 284lb in August which is the highest weight there this year. Recently Andy Partridge had 225lb down the edge. The same day as I had 211 lb caught at 5m. There were around 5 other ton plus weights that day.
I have been on other matches when 80lb had won and arounds 60lb has been 6th so everybody had a realistic chance of winning.
I have also seen anglers persisting down the side and struggling for bites when they see other anglers catching by fishing longer, each to there own…
Like all waters Mawgan Porth has been affected by the weather, and angling pressure and on some days does not fish as well as anglers expect. Today was an example of that, it was very hard. Thats fishing and I look forward to the next match when I will go with an open mind and try to catch where the fish want to be.

It was me who won with 22-13 on tuesday there were 12 of us and another group of 10 on the pool
It had fished hard the previous 2 days as well but tuesday was very windy, wet and cold
I caught all my fish on pellet feeding the on site garlic micros

                                Get on Gwinear…

                                Non Fishery pellets…

                                Cup of tea…or a butty…

                                No stiff neck…

We were the other group of anglers that fished it tuesday and we were expecting decent weights, fished it two years ago and saw an otter come out of the water. Janet told us we had to put any of her new carp (under 3″) back in the water which suggests to me they have had to re-stock for one reason or another.
Whiteacres has fished very hard this week.
Bolingey on wednesday was the best days fishing of the week.

It has fished a bit harder, although I believe it has been brilliant ( as always) considering the weather starting to deteriorate combined with the sheer number of anglers on the complex.

if there’d been 100 on the rover i don’t think you’d have got near the top 6 with 70lb

No re-stocking has taken place at Mawgan only the Natural variety.
The stock levels are still vast in there with no need for extra stocking!
However all venues go through change.

There have been a few more anglers on the lake of late, surely it’s a mathmatical equation that the more anglers that fish, there will be less fish to go around!!!
Coupled with the change in the weather, around 10c cooler than a few weeks ago with longer colder nights its going to fish harder.

Fish also are getting bigger and wiser, meaning the angler has to work harder, the fish arnt going to be caught year on year on the same line & same methods – as Stew states above surely this is for the good of the fishing down there!!

                                            1) NO restocking has taken place.
                                            2) ANY small carp have bread on naturally within the lake.
                                            3) STOCK LEVELS are still very high in the lake – so there is no need to re-stock.

Like others have said, if fish arent been stocked those original fish that keep getting caught short will wise up eventually and back off, why wouldnt the weights drop even if the fish are still there in numbers. That, along with colder temps (At the mo) what do people expect year after year, top 3 pellet all the time??

                                                      TF_Simon P

Rigs wise you will need 0.14’s and 0.16’s + a few 0.12’s if it fishes harder.
                                                        I always fish straight through.

Average depth is around 3-4ft a little deaper at the far end, but if only a few of you are fishing i doubt that end will be pegged.

Elastic wise i use 14 latex but black hydro or sim. would be fine, they do pull in there!!

I use Malman Snake 4 floats 4×12’s & 4×14’s but any strong float that can take a bit of abuse will do!!!

I find it pays to blacken off the tip of the float under the water line, leaving the coloured part of the tip proud of the water – when fishing close and in clear’ish shallow water bites can be hard to see with the float tip left as standard.

Good luck, when are you down???

fish are 1lb to 4lb with a handful bigger.
Hooked fish charge all over the place, especially in the shallower pegs – hence the stronger line.
At times you will need to steer them away from weed.

Also you will find that most carp spin in the landing net whilst being unhooked which causes many a broken rig if not stepped up.

Simon is correct on the line strengths. In fact I use even heavier lines than that! The fish are not line shy and at this time of year I would not go lighter than a .16 hook length. It is not the size of the fish it is the abuse the line takes in the landing net that is the problem. You are potentailly fishing for 200lb of fish which is around 160 carp, that is a lot of fish threashing in your landing net and a lot of line rubbing on the edge of the net. Last Friday an angler next to me had to change to .18 line as he could not get them away from the weed with anything less. He probably lost (snapped) a dozen fish on a very hard day and low weight day.
The floats I use are J Range – J3 models in 4 x 10 size. They can be bought at the venue.
May see ya there, hope you have a good holiday.
