AnonymousI’ve had a Preston Freeflow roller for the past 2 years and broke more sections than i’ve ever done due to it blowing over in the wind or the pole blowing out of it when it’s anchored down. The curved rollers at the bottom of the V part mean the pole rocks about and is blown out of the roller easily.
First time out fishing at the weekend for 6 months and a light breeze tipped the whole lot but luckily no damage. So it’s time to look for another pole roller.
A traditionl 4 leg pole roller seems the best option but i’ve never found one that adjusts high enough. The new Maver Competition XL looks fully adjustable and is looking like my best option. Any others?

TF_SluicerI had the PI Pro-V roller, then a PI Free-flow – neither would stay upright in anything more than a strong breeze.
I reverted to the large Diawa rocking roller – which I use along with a smaller Diawa flat roller where space permits.
They don’t have the height adjustment of the V-type rollers, but they’re so much more stable.

TF_GLEBE1Ive got the Maver one, good bit of kit, goes really high and has a hook on the central shaft to either hang a bag on or i carry a length of string with tent pegs on that i can anchor it to the ground with, having said that i havent felt the need to do either yet.

TF_James_HI went through the same dilemma after the roller blew over and left me with a costly new section.
I’ve ended up drilling 8mm holes in each of the Preston Super Pro V legs and using Fox bivvy pegs, only problem now is when it’s placed on concrete/hard ground.
Maver now sell a new 4 legged roller that has double extending legs, this may be worth a look? Saying this, I have a Maver Competition V Roller somewhere and it fell to pieces after a few uses.

TF_hempmasterDeffo’ worth an investment to stop the potential of a section damage but the escalating price of such as the milo prince means a compromise ,especially as i cater for my two lads.We use the daiwa pro http://www.tedcarter.co.uk/product.php?pid=daiwa-tournament-pro-v-double-pole-roller-95511
which has legs that are multi-positional /angle.Believe the maver version is identical all bar the cosmetics. And ironically have just got two maver comp’xl flats
http://www.tedcarter.co.uk/product.php?pid=maver-competition-xl-flat-bed-roller-114849 which believe are very similar to the milo version which may be slightly wider but has a pinky/red roller.
The new browning “hoop” type for attaching to the thread of a tripod or bankstick will have its uses and is a uptake on those that convert an old landing net rim by covering the rim with pipe lagging or similar. -

spot on in the wind uck the graphics its only paint against new sections only one winner.ps if you fix a couple of brackets to your rod bag handle strap with a length of blue bendy water pipe you can contain pole in a reserve ???if only i could put picture up must learn how to do it lol

To be honest, I never had any problems using my carryall as a pole roller years ago. Just stuff a 3/4 length jacket and a few other bit’s & bobs in it and it works a treat.

DrKennyParticipantMilo Prince for me, I was fortunate to get a couple before they went up in price, even at £150 I would still buy them though as this is less than a section for a £2K pole and this roller will save sections!
A guy in our shop made me an adapter thing so I could put one of the arms vertically, with the vertical arm against the wind and the legs extended and flat it is not going anywhere. -

tournament_prorod bag and jacket, if its windy put a bankstick in the ground so it cant blow off the holdall
if you use a v-roller then either disgard the base and ram the stick into the ground, or dont use it if its really windy
and if you do use a v-roller……come on use a proper luggage strap across the top not the flimsy thing they come supplied with
Dave Heron, or who ever the author was, if you’ve broken more sections than ever, dont keep doing the same thing…..

That is the way, anchor it to the ground. You can buy a screw type thing that goes into the ground for tethering horses. Screw it into the ground and tie the roller to it.

PazzaWhen its really windy and I am using a Vroller I tighten the strap on my rod bag and hang the strap over the small middle roller. Pole ships fine and the weight of the rod bag means no danger of it getting blown over. I tend to combine a Vroller with a flat roller and rarely suffer from the pole getting blown out of the rollers or them tipping over.

TF_StewartMilo Brooklyn Maxi is really good, wouldn’t be without mine. When it’s really windy Milo Prince with the legs extended and parallel to the bank, there is no way it will topple over plus it is very high with the extension.

TF_wiggley wormhad a diawa v roller used it once in the rain and the rollers seized up so the rollers never rolled again went back to my tried and trusted boss rollers

TF_dirkdigglermilo brooklyn too (although it looks like bechers brook when set up)
refuses to blow over unlike my prince which did twice.
when it’s really bad i’ll usually reach for the tip rod instead. -

TF_carpa22ParticipantI have the Maver xl competition superb piece of kit, the best v roller out there, the legs can be set flush to the ground once they are set it is mega stable in any wind, not the cheapest but at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

TF_eelsI’ve got 2 Milo prince rollers and with the legs set 90 degrees to the central column they are impossible to blow over. Cost a fair bit but i’ve had a cheap roller (£60) blow over and break a number 6 section.
Worth looking out for second hand ones ,i got a mint one for £70. -

TF_ebbwmiloAnother vote for the original 4 legged Boss. Been using them for years and never had one go over or the pole blow off them.
There is slight spikes on the legs to so if it is blowing a gale you can push them into the ground (if its grass of course) -
23/02/2011 at 8:30 pm #133425
TF_saratogai never use v type rollers there wank, always use flat type rollers and can honestly say never had my pole blow out of these unlike the v type .
i use milo brooklyn rollers the maxi and the standard one they are superb, the maxi extends as high as any v type and is solid -

TF_craigmI use the new Maver Xl flat roller, brilliant piece of kit and with double extending legs it goes as high as most V rollers.

TF_Wagandmagsecond the Maver Comp xl post, they are spot on and as said still can get the height of a V roller

TF_paulDI think the older version of the big Maver flatbed is better, the one with the steel frame. It weighs about 8lb but is very wide and goes over 3′ high. It will NEVER blow over and has got roller bearings so is very smooth. Some shops still have them and Browning still do the same roller in orange. The old faithful Boss is brilliant as its so easy to carry but ive had them fold in the wind – the bloody legs keep jaming aswell.

Yes that’s me, i’ve broken a No6 & No7 last winter and that’s the 2nd & 3rd section i’ve broken on My CC-44 & CC-66 in the 8-9 years that i’ve had it. Broken due to the design of the Freeflow roller.
Maver Competition XL roller is still top of the list so far.
I know everyone rates the original Boss roller, but the legs look way too thin to be as stable as everyone says? I could be wrong but they’ve been about a long time.

TF_GillboI have a Maver Competition XL roller and a Maver Pro V roller. Both are very good, the Competion is especially usefull when you have a bank behind you due to the height. Also the double break down is handy if you are fishing short swims as you dont end up scraping your pole down the other section. I still have two original Boss rocking rollers though ans the oldest must be over 10 years old. They are great on grass banks as with the legs being thin you can really push them down deep into the ground so they don’t move. On concrete though the Boss rollers are not as stable and the legs will move. The Maver is a lot bette in the situation as it is bigger and heavier and the legs lock into place to prevent them moving.

TF_GavinIf you can get the points of the legs in the ground of the original Boss rollers they won’t go anywhere!

TF_wightangleranother vote for new Maver Competition XL flatbed roller-legs extend to around 4′, bit narrower than the superb milo brooklyn but a bit cheaper.
Used to use Boss ones but found that leg length height a bit limiting on certain venues.
Worth it if you regulary fish long and use 2 rollers-or have to unship to get length out. -

cathalParticipantDavid,
Fill the roller bag with stones and place it across the roller supports, that stops it from blowing over. A bungee across the top stops the pole blowing out. I fish the same place as you and never had a roller blow over doing it this way. -

The weekend past I didn’t bother because it wasn’t windy. If I put a bungie across the top of the freeflow roller, the 2 rollers make contact at the base of the ‘V’ and do not rotate freely.
My Freeflow is now on eBay anyway so I will be looking for another roller.
