TF_vicci5can anyone confirm how accurate the stated line diameters are for powerline was making rigs the other day and notice a new spool of 0.09mm seemed as thick as a spool of 0.11mm anyone ever had one of them micrometers on the stuff or know if it gets tested in batchs.Lost a bit of faith in it after that an thinking of changing to ultima as they seem to pride themselves on accuratly stated diameters and breaking strains??????

TF_bagging machineParticipantFrom memory they are approx 0.02mm bigger dia. than stated, gave all mine away and wont use anything but Silstar match team.

TF_andy cranes mateParticipantI don’t trust any of the line makers stated diameters. Your always better to measure them for yourself. A micrometer is a valuable investment.

TF_DATPrestons micrometer got broken and they are now using an old wooden ruler to work out the diameters.

Anonymoushave had matchteam thats been understated.good line tho as is powerline.i use both(powerline for hooklength’s)by using a diameter smaller eg .07 istead of .08 and .06 instead of .07 etc.works fine for me.

TF_superg10i think it is the wosrt thing you can do is check line diaminters because its constantly on your mind when your fishing is the bloke next to me catching becasue the line he is using is spot . no cause its not just stick to a line you like even if the diaminter isnt spot on it does not make a difference at all power line is a good line and there are 100s off top anglers using it . it is probably the most popular line on the market

TF_missabiteWhat the actual line diameter is is something I’ve never worried about. I use 0.11 in the winter, 0.13 in the spring, 0.15/17 in the summer and back to 0.13 in the autumn.
-
10/03/2011 at 5:18 pm #134770
TF_fishcatcher4If i buy some line that says its diameter is .11 then thats what the diameter should be.I wont buy the preston because the line is thicker than stated so the strength to diameter ratio is not correct.

TF_Man of KentEach to his own, but if you take 0.02mm off the stated diameter, it will be correct. Buy it with your eyes open (i.e. on the understanding that the diameter is off by 0.02). It doesn’t let me down and I’ve been using it for almost as long as it has been available. I have total confidence in it and select the correct diameter for each occasion based on my experience with it.
I had a silvers match on a carp lake last autumn and managed to get 2 double figure carp in on 0.06. Mind you, I had to hand line the buggers! Not what you should be doing on this kind of gear, but I planned on the hooklength parting or the hook to straighten if I hooked a carp by mistake. It didn’t happen.
Sorry, I sound like Fred with the Ultima stuff!!

TF_b15ape1ParticipantI use ultima lines for all my roach and winter fishing because that 0.02 of difference can make all the difference to your catch rate imo anyway.
But in the warmer months i do use preston line it is very good and strong line especially carp bashing! -
10/03/2011 at 8:42 pm #134808
TF_FISHER-PRICEI use Preston powerline mainline on my rigs now with a Preston exceed hooklength, the exceed is supposed to be exactly what it says it is.
That said I’m yet to catch a carp or any other species for that matter in possesion of a micrometer!!! -

TF_AnthonywatersParticipantVicci5 dont worry about it just find something you like i use silstar matchteam i can tie a size 20 on a 4.6lb bottom hows that for diameter ? Its the same as hooks they vary so much in size across the board.

TF_RenarcI had a days coaching session with young Andy May last April, he proved to me that my rigs using the preston line allmost exclusivly, just did not allow me to have balanced rigs, I used his own line( shan’t say which, but you proberbly already know)and my catch rate was unbelievable, chucked all my preston power line away, and no I diden’t use his recommended line, but used the shimano silk shock, my season was completly turned around, and my confidence in the new and more accurate line helped me to go on and win my clubs league and aggregate league as well. The use of micrometers might seem a bit OTT,but that one session proved to me conclusivly that a more accurate line will catch you more fish…ask any of the other regular match anglers,Steve Ringer,Mat Hall, Tom Pikering etc and they will agree, having an accurate line does work, its not the sole reason, but it has to part of your approach to acieving a result, thier consistant performances proves it to me.

TF_GavinEvery article and DVD I’ve ever seen Tommy Pickering in he’s using Powerline (or just Power as it is now) ~clap

TF_Fred DavisOnly one line to use imo Ultima Power match absolutely superb, three of my mates have just switched to using it and can’t stop raving about how good it is, when it comes to tying hooks without the line crinkling up at the spade or moving shot without any line damage being limp and accurate in diameter and also mega strong then I have yet found anything to beat it. Although I was one of the field testers prior to this lines launch I have still yet found nothing to match it in all round quality, if I had I would be using it.

TF_RutilusI have mic’d up Powerline and the diameters are all .02mm out.
0.11 was .13; 0.13 was 0.15 and 0.19 was (yes you guessed it) 0.21.Top anglers may well use powerline but they are aware of the difference and take this into account.
It’s not a bad line just wrongly labelled.
Personally I won’t buy Preston line again but I am using my old stock up. I have written the true diameter on the spool and so use the 0.11 where I would use 0.13 in another brand. Most Italian brands are way out.
I now use Matchteam or Drennan Rig line – both accurate and reliable lines.

Paul_TApologies for hijacking the thread….
I have been using Pro Micron as hooklength line for 20 years or so now and I am getting to the end of my supply of 0.07mm & 0.08mm for the canal. I have used Silstar Matchteam (WB Clarke) for all my main lines with no issues, again for years, but I think it’s overstated in diameter, and I wouldn’t use the 0.06mm it just doesn’t look right to me.
So what are you guys/girls using as hooklength material in low diameters please? I was considering the drennan stuff on the blue spools until my mate was snapping some like cotton straight from the spool on saturday (it was 0.08mm and less than a year old) It could have been a bad batch though. I’m not knocking Drennan gear at all, it would be my first choice as it’s normally quality stuff.
I remember seeing Fox micro stuff years ago in the mags, which I assumed was the old pro micron re-badged, but I have a feeling it is now discontinued?
Any suggestions please? Thanks!

TF_GavinI don’t! I’m plenty aware af the tricks and truth bending that goes on in what are pretty much advertorials rather than articles now.
I’m just pointing out that that it’s a line that, like many others, isn’t quite what it says on the spool! That doesn’t mean it wont catch fish, it just means you need to be a bit savvy if you use it. -

TF_GavinPaul T- Fox always denied that the Micro was Pro-Micron, but yes it’s now superceeded by the Micro Plus.

TF_C.A.T.C.H.ParticipantSilk Shock is very good for pole rigs as both main line and hook lengths.
I was told that the new Colmic X5000 is better but Im more than happy with the S S so wont be changing.Still use Pro Micron in 0.09 – 0.06 but not very often as I fish Commies mostly.

TF_dave brittainI know a lot of very good anglers who swear by Power Line, however I prefer the Shakespeare AML which has been superceeded by Berkley XWR.
Ref Shimano Silk Shock I was recently sent a spool of 0.12 dia by AT and I was very surprised when I tied some hooks up as it seemed to be identical to Shakespeare AML apart from the stated dia and breaking strain which differ until you mic them up and find they are the same, (Shimano states 0.12 dia and 1.86 Kg breaking strain, whereas Shakespeare states 0.128 and 0.176 Kg).
I’ve tried pull tests and can’t tell the difference.

Anonymousas long as you know your lines strength it doesnt really matter the stated diameter, I use antares silk shock and also silstar, for the same stated diameter the silstar is a little thinner and weaker than the silk shock so I can use a ,14 of silk shock as rig line and a silstar .14 hooklength, as long as it don’t knik then most of the top lines are good you just have to get comfy with a line and stick to it
