TF_Waveney OneThe 85 anglers fishing saw the day dawn bright and mild with a SW wind and the river looked in good trim with a flood tide for half the match and a good colour of 10 inches visibility. With the amount of colour in the river it was strange that the fish were very tightly shoaled.
Doug Botley of Diawa Angling Direct drew well on peg 23 through the ‘Golden Gate’ above the pump. He spent the 5 minutes of the match casting a big feeder out to get some bait into the water. He then tied on a hook length and before he had put his rod into the rest he was into his first bream. The fish kept taking his bait and
he had between 30 and 40lb before those either side of him had a fish!2nd was Tom Boulton pegged next to Doug on peg 22, often the better of the 2 pegs. However it took some time before he first hooked a fish and he ended up with 39lb exactly.
Full results were as follows
1st Doug Botley, Diawa Angling Direct, peg 23 with 76 12
2nd Tom Boulton, Diawa Angling Direct, peg 22 with 39 00
3rd Lewis Murawski, Anglers World, 35 08
4th J. Parnell, D A D 28.12
5th Warren Martin, Anglers World 27 04At least 2 sections were won on the pole with roach (fish to over a 1lb) and weights over 20lb.

TF_wozzRichard, rest of framimg pegs were lewis 30, james 138, me 61.
I had the scales for 61 – 79 and i reckon i weighed over 250lb of fish, odd bream, odd big hybrids, lots of skimmers and an awful lot of roach to over a pound. i usually only fish the river a couple of times a season but im going to have the whole summer there this year, that was a brilliant match. -

TF_Waveney OneCheers Warren, thanks for the info on the missing peg numbers. Apart from those 2 fish photographed above, my section was really hard, but heigh ho, another day another draw!

TF_wildingukjust wondering what feeder rods you lot use on the yare, hoping to come have a few pleasure sessions in the coming months.

TF_Waveney OneI use a specialist rod made by Normark under the Nisa Feeders banner. It has a 3 oz carbon tip but they are not made anymore. Before that I used a Drennan Medium Feeder with a 2 1/2 oz medium tip, still do occasionally.
You need a stiff rod because of the flow but you are fishing for skimmers and roach so it mustn’t be a broom stick. Will Freeman the Preston Rep is bringing along one the Dutch Master river rods as soon as he can lay his hands on one. The lightest, shortest one may be just right.

TF_Waveney OneYou need to find the right flow and depth on the river Nathan, that will tell you where to fish. The river varies but is probably between 80 and 120 yards wide and on most of it I fish where the flow is. Genaerally that is 1/3 to 2/3 rds across. There are some big bends. Where I was yesterday on 56 it was bottomless, well maybe 15 foot + and to go right across to the shallower water on that flood tide I would have needed too much lead to lead. As it was I was on a 75grms on the flood but only needed 45 on the ebb casting right across.
There were a number of pole weights, including at least 2 section wins with weights of roach over 20lb and with fish from an ounce to 1lb al through the different year classes.

TF_NathanWatsonThanks, what about the bait, are they on the pellet and corn yet or is it still maggot caster and worm? Also, what feeders, hooks and line are you using?

TF_Waveney OneFishmeal in any form is usually the kiss of death although as there are a few carp in the river (where doesn’t have any these days?) some pleasure anglers have been putting pellet in and catch bream. They fish at night on their own though! So it is traditional sweet bream ground baits with worms, casters and sweetcorn in it.
For the feeder I use a mix of brown crumb, Sensas Gros Gardon Noire, Bream 3000, and VDE Secret in about equal parts, perhaps a little more Secret and Gros Gardon Noire than the others. The big roach will often take corn as well as the bream and skimmers but I always start on 3 maggots on 14. If I start to catch skimmers then I up the hook to a 12 and try a worm. The fish are not shy of hooks and line. I use Tubertini Series 2 Rosso hooks in size 12 or 14 with 0.15 Powerline on a fairly short hook length when it is coloured. Either a big worm or a bunch of maggots. Mainline, I am embarrassed to say that I use what I use for method feeder carping, 6lb Sensor. There are more and more zebra mussels appearing in the river so it needs to be changed often enough.
I am no expert on the pole and try to avoid it. Where I was yesterday was crying out for the pole and possibly if I had one in my bag and used it I would have won the section easily. I was pegged in ‘Roach Bay’ as it is known and the next section upstream was won with over 20lb of roach. To fish it you need a load of G/B much the same but without the Breames and Crumb, loads of casters and hemp. Ball it and then a small ball almost every cast. A 14’s or 16’s hook. Very few skimmers on the pole line.

TF_NathanWatsonLovely, thanks! 🙂 Sounds a bit expensive to fish the pole! 😮
