I’ve always had most success when fishing shallow “up to 3ft deep” with no shot down the line, or just a no 11, yet i see alot of features in mags, vids where the pro’s use a bulk very close to the hook!! Is this more for f1’s?, I dont really fish many heavily stocked f1 places? or just offputting info?

Iike a lot of others I love shallow fishing and practically always use the bulk above a short hooklength. It was the way I was shown many years ago at places like Willow Park when the Roach fishing was amongst the best in the country. The idea is to get the bait down quickly to the level the fish are feeding at, the bulk aids very positive bite indication. This style worked well for me for years ago and still does. Other anglers prefer a bait to drop slowly through the water and put very little or no shot on the line, I will do this if I find that is how the fish want it on the day. Perhaps its best to keep an open mind and experiment to find what is best on any given day.

I like a shirt button style shotting on my rig when shallow fishing and Ive had good anglers criticise saying thats wrong and I should have a bulk under my float and nothing else, I think shallow fishing is more about how you build the swim up if you feed right on the day and get the fish where you want em you could catch shallow on any rig ive done it before where ive shortened a 4×14 deck rig up and caught shallow with that with the bulk 10 inches from the hook.

I like to fish 3 inches deep and fire 14 pints of pellet over the top 😀

                lol just the 14?,
if it’s hard i like to fish the meathod on the pole at 4m and keep slapping it every 3 seconds

i dont fish heavy stocked f1 lakes but do fish the same as you with the shot high so the hook bait drops like the feed however never stick to the same all the time
try a few changes ive done as the above then put a no8 right next to the hook and they have nailed it seeing it drop at speed
the most important change in there feeding is if the water is coloured or clear

I will use no shot down the line if catching on the drop so your bait matches the fall of the feed. This would be mostly with bigger baits like hard pellet.

You can see when the pellet hits the bottom of the drop on the float if it is a 6-8mm, so it is easy to read bites.
