Perhaps you need to try a different pellet. Paler (lower oil) pellets seem to be easier to use than darker ones. Although I have had some dark ones which dampen easily, maybe the others were too old?
I just cover mine with plenty of water when I get to my peg and leave them. Probably about 4 pints of water to 2 pints of micros.
By the time I start fishing, they are perfect for squeezing a ball or pressing onto a method feeder.
Don’t be afraid to really give them a hard squeeze, either. They may look like a ball of paste, but they still break down into individual pellets again.
