        Guys ,

I am using 0.19 N Gage direct to the hook and was wondering whats the strongest hook I could use for a single grain of corn ,

Seems that the margin fish I am targeting just don’t want to take anything other than a piece of corn . Trouble I am having is tying my main line to a 16 hook I think the line is to big for the spade and I am worried that the knot will come undone under pressure . The Fox series 2 is the perfect hook in a size 16 but I am still not sure the spade is big enoughto tie 0.19 direct .

Also would i get the same presentation using an eyed hook ? Your suggestions please .

For starters when using that sort of line i always use an eyed hook and use a knotless knot for exactly the reason you mentioned. Drennan Super Carp Hair Riggers are fantastic as they have an out turned eye so the hook sits perfectly. Had carp upto 21lb on these hooks on the pole, absolutely brilliant hooks. You will get the 0.19 through the eye without any problem also.

Have a look at the Drennan carp margin. I am using a 16 to 0.18 Fox line no problem. The 16 is quite small, I fish double maggot on it so for a single grain of corn a 14 might be better 🙂

I’d definitely not use a knotless knot if you’re after strength. It’s a poor knot for mono. Use a palomar, leave a long tag and trap it to the shank with a bit of silicone if you want a hair. Barbless Margin Carp are seriously strong bit of kit.

I would never use eyed hooks except for barbel in PC (pre-commercials) days. Now I wouldn’t dream of using spade ends with barbs except on the R Yare where I fish with worm a lot. On the river even on the pole, I tend to revert to barbed hooks with spade ends.

Maybe have a look out for the new Guru hooks, the Extra Strong Carp spade (I think?) Sure I read they have a bigger spade on them to allow for thicker line.

Fosx Series 2 Extra Strong are pretty good for this, have a bigger spade, so fine for line up to 0.20mm in a size 16.

Tubertini 175 is well strong and ace for meat too imo 😉

Not had a problem with the knotless knot and where i fish they are all double figure fish and with 0.19, red hydro ive not had one hook go at the knot this year. So this other way of tying a hook may be stronger but unless your towing a car i think a knotless knot is more than sufficient on commercials.

I can strongly recommend using the Guru X-Strong spade end. These are a hook I’ve been using for 6months now and they would be ideal for a single grain of corn.
I’ve landed carp up to 21 pounds on these, simply a awesome hook!!!
