TF_drawbag1967We all have one thing in common on this site which is the love of fishing, mainly match fishing, but I’ve been looking around at some of the guys I’ve been competing against recently and there doesn’t appear to be to many youngsters either entering or when they do making an impact, has anyone out there got any names to look out for in the future.

TF_GillboI’m 22 and theres a lot of lads my age range who fish the circuit around here on Woodlands and the Oaks. Lads like Adam Richards, Joe Carass, Steve Baraclough, James Dent and a few others are all right up there in the sport. There also quite a few other young lads between 17-24 who fish for the big local clubs such as Browning Quaker and Daiwa Cleveland. I will agree that most anglers are in there 40-50’s around here but then that fits wih peoples life cycles. I know a lot of peoples who have there time limited or even pack in due to family commitments in there 20’s-30’s. The biggest thing which goes against most young lads is the cost, if I fish two days of the weekend it can cost me anywhere between £60-100 in bait, petrol and pools, then theres things like breakfasts and terminal gear then the big expensive items of tackle on top. I think if your doing it by yourself without some backing or sponsorship and are not picking up regularly its very hard to justify the expense.

TF_carpmagicParticipantIn the North there seems to be exceptional young anglers as Gilbo mentions. Doesnt seem quite the same in the midlands although there are a few coming through, not sure why that should be to be honest. Might have something to do with the types of fishing we have on offer being very different to whats available up North.

SteveScouple of young uns in the midlands: Matt Smith and Mark Malin (Matt has fished a fisho final already) both are in their early 20s I think, and both class acts especially on commercials.
also Kurtis Tranter; and a young lad who’s about 15 called Sam Hughes who is based in the Forest of Dean but is starting to venture out into the midlands open scene.
I agree that there does not appear to be too many younger anglers coming through the ranks though.

TF_Joe Carassthe problem isnt the amount of ‘superstars’ coming through, its just the sheer lack of youngsters coming through in general. although there is a hotbed of talent up north at the moment there is only at the most 10!!! added to the 10 in the midlands and the 10 down south its a sad state of affairs. the youngsters seem to be more drawn to the ‘celebrity’ culture that surrounds big carp fishing these days.

Ketton boyJoe’s point about young anglers is spot on – as a young angler he can see how many others he fishes aginst his age.
It isn’t as easy to get into Match Fishing as people think. Not that there are real barriers but it can be quite intimidating, venues can be unforgiving and the demise of clubs running opens has broken some of the links between pleasure/club anglers and match anglers. I think the opens run by clubs on their waters added significant numbers to many of the large opens, meant that a few times a year club anglers and juniors rubbed shoulders with open match anglers. Hardly any of these go on now.
When I was a kid there were junior matches in the evenings for kids – about 20 pegs or so. Now that club doesn’t even exist, let alone run junior sections. Don’t like to look back with rose tinted specs but in this matter things haven’t changed for the better in my view.

TF_mike pattinsonI remember when the internet competitions started and a bunch of young lads wanted to fish them and couldn’t get a team, real keen they where. We joined them and formed the Angling forums north team. Them youngsters were
Ben Fisk
Joe Carass
Adam RichardsI’m really annoyed I cannot remember the other lads name, all around 13yrs old at the time and we won on weight, those lads showed many an adult how to fish then and have never stopped.

Mike Sterland, Don’t know, Joe, Ben, Zinky, Mike Shaw, Mick Relph. Myself and Adam were checking the results. -

TF_mike pattinsonDoing OK Joe, getting older and arthritic. Still fishing regular over here in Cumbria, although not at present with weather; may go ice breaking on sunday.
Not travelling around like i used to, don’t seem to have the time or the patients for the drive home.
Last internet linked match was when we (AF)won at Lindholme, what four/five years ago.

TF_redarmythat lindholme match was that the one where we were all on loco ? i was pegged next to a certain joe carras that day with gaz malman on the other side of joe messing with a waggler he was moulding groundbait round it so it sank when cast out and about 20 seconds later when the groundbait had broken down the waggler would shoot to the surface.everyone thought he was mad on a very hard day until he caught a 4lb carp lol.i won the match in the corner with about 11LB.

two shakesI think match organisers should set a “minimum” age limit.35 would be a good starting point, but 40 would be better.
