TF_JohnHI currently use TDR 3012 which sell for about £135, is there any justification for upgrading to the more expensive TDX or Arity?
These are significantly more expensive and I am aware of two anglers who have had to send TDX reels back with problems. My TDRs have been very good after a few years of use now.
I have not looked at what other reels are available from other manufacturers but have concluded for now that TDRs are the way to go.
I fish mainly for carp 2 to 16lb range on wag and bomb/method and would value others opinions. -

TF_GLEBE1Not impressed with the clutch on my TDX, even replaced the shims but no better, should have stuck with the TDR
I’ve also got 2 Tierras from the states, better clutches too IMHO

My mate sold his 2 tdx’s fairly soon after he purchased them.He to was not happy with the clutch on them.I put a similar post to this on another forum and got a reply from a well known angler that my mate was talking out of his *rse.He is so pleased that he did not sell all of his cu’s.
Have you had a look at the Caldia x’s -

TF_JohnHA friend bought the TDX in May, by June he asked me for an opinion as he thought it a bit rough. As soon as I twitched the handle it sounded like the gears were full of sand. He took it back to the shop and they have sent it back to Daiwa where it remains.
My TDR s have had a fair bit of abuse and they still run like RRoyce’s.
I love the clutches as I can fish with the anti reverse on all the time, it saves loads of tangles when fishing in windy weather.
Sounds like TDR’s are the ones to have. -

TF_SliderTry and get hold of Daiwa Tierras from the states, they are almost identical to a TDR, half the cost and IMHO have a far superior clutch !

TF_baitchefParticipantI bought a pair of the Tierras from the states when they first came out. Cracking little spinning reels, waterproof clutch bearings et al because of the salt water and what not. However I hope they never go wrong as its going to be a bit of a nightmare getting them fixed, parts etc. Bit cheeky to expect daiwa uk to put them right.
Best stick with the TDR’s if i was you, they are plenty capable for any uk situation. -

TF_SliderAfter nearly 5 years of use and showingno signs of wear at all, my tierras will not need to go back to Daiwa, when they break I shall retire them with the grace and respect they deserve 🙂 🙂

TF_dendraI,ve had a pair of Tierra 4000s from the States for several years now, good reels but they don’t seem to have the same backbone as my TDS 3003 cu,s.Daiwa will not do repairs to the cu,s anymore which is very disappointing IMO.I have broke the line clips on two spools and they won’t repair them .

TF_dirkdigglerI had two Airity reels both of which broke.
I sent them both back and recieved them both back still broken.
Then through a process of deduction i managed to fix them myself.
Also a while ago i sent a top of the range Daiwa carp reel back only to recieve it back with completely the wrong spool on it. -

TF_chunkyloverParticipantI’ve seen and also read a little on the new daiwa Ballistic reels soon to be released in the UK, anyone know what reel these will be replacing??
I.e. Are they mid priced reels or top of the range ??

TF_squattThey will be £140-150. Watch out though as they have a very fast retrieve.

TF_toplightsI have used TD CUs in both sizes for years, best reel they have made imo.See no reason to change. If you want to sell one send me a PM,cash waiting.

TF_sillysodhave also used the tdr and cu’s for years and cant fault them, the only improvement i would like to see is the hip line clip fitted, like on the tdms, which are also a good reel although not in the same league has the tdr-but cheaper when you have multiple set ups

TF_allyParticipantI still use the CU,s and see no reason to change. I think the new reels look and feel great but are probably overkill for the fishing that most of us do. They are designed as spinning reels, as that is the main world wide use for them and quite simply, the average coarse angler will come no where near putting them under the strain that they are capable of taking.
All you have to do is take a look at some of the fishing tackle sites from abroad to see that there are a whole host of daiwa reels that are not for sale in this country. I suspect much is due to price points and marketing stratergys, but some reels are also not suited for our uses. For instance the cu,s sold in this country were daiwa s, but there was a more expensive z version sold elsewhere. I bought one in from Oz and although its lighter and smoother I have always preferred using the s version as although on paper the better reel is the z, it s just not quite right. Its a bit like using a ferrarri for the school run. -

TF_dendraDoes anybody know where I may be able to get line clips repaired on my cu,s? Cant believe Daiwa will not repair them.

Mark,i got this off another forum, posted by someone called “gilbo” im sure he used to post on here, anyway here it is……………..
“. Take a plastic coated paper clip and cut it down. Bed it to form a clip shape and bend the end over 90 degrees. Remove what is left of the line clip and replace with the section of paperclip. For the bit that goes inside the spool make a slight twist and glue in place with epoxy. The plastic coating means it is rust free and very gentle on the line in the clip. They are supper strong and peform really well. I find them easier to clip the line into than those plastic ones fitted to the reels. You can give the cast a good thump or pull out off a snag without worrying about the clip breaking off.
Just thought would pass this on as a handy tip that saves a good few quid. For the carp angler who is fixed with colours then paperclips come in all different colours. Prefer red on mine! “

TF_dendraCheers Jeff, Dave is going to have a look at them for me,he reckons a nylon pop rivet will do the trick backed with a tiny piece inner tube.

TF_GLEBE1Well thats me totally finished with my TDX!! A few weeks ago i had a play with my mates kit after a match and caught half a dozen carp on his feeder rod.
The reel was a crusty old 3003 cu, i was amazed at the difference to the TDX id been using for 6 months,it has bags more winding power and more importantly the clutch is infinately better than the TDX.
I set myself the task of finding one of these and ive bagged myself a boxed minter, spooled it up and used it today and i can confirm its so much better (for me) than the TDX, serves me right for being a tart!! -

TF_slipperyI agree with you 100% Glebe1.Had my cu’s for more years than i can remember.Still going strong and nothing that has come out from Daiwa since they stopped making them, has convinced me that i need to upgrade my cu’s. 🙂
