TF_wightanglerHeard this from brackish or salt water.
Does this means a sprinking of sea salt would be better than rainwater?
Also, if just leam as separator added- how long will this keep or would be better just neat with atomiser in fridge? -

TF_red_hydroIf you are planning to use it within the next couple of days, I would just leave it in the paper and keep it damp
Any longer and I would put it in a bubbler
When I spoke to Russ from North West Worms, he told me not to bother putting any salt in with it

two shakesRussian joker does come from brackish water, its smaller and less lively than Polish/English joker, but is hardier and much easier to take care of.It will keep quite happily in newspaper,if left on a cold garage floor or bottom of bait fridge, with nothing more than an odd squirt from an atomiser. You can also give it a dusting of riddled damp leam which it will be quite happy in.I’ve had it last for over a month if kept like this, and sometimes just left in damp newspaper in the boot of my car lol. However, don’t be tempted to try and keep it like Polish/English joker,i.e in water,it will drown !!

TF_sumoI thought salt from groundbait was supposed to kill Joker ! does that mean russian joker is better for use with groundbait ?

A stacking tray system with water trickling thru will not only clean the joker..it can live quite happily for weeks…even grow in size as it has a drink..

gmanParticipantThe Russian Joker is much easier to keep. This time of the year I just add a bit of leam to whatever is left at the end of a match and wrap it back in the newspaper. As stated above you can leave it in the boot and it will be okay the following weekend. Polish/English needs to be tanked. As baits however they act totally differently in the water. Russian hits the bottom and lies dormant. Pol/Eng is active and at any time a number swim up from the bottom an inch or so, making it more attractive to Roach & Perch. The Russian stuff makes a better feed for skimmers and quality fish that prefer to hoover the feed up. The disadvantage with Russian is it’s size when it comes to baiting a hook.
That said we use it every week in winter on our canal & river circuit and you never know what’s coming till you open a pack at the draw. The last few seasons its been 80% Russian. I think It’s more guaranteed for the dealers to arrive in good nick because it’s so much hardier in transport.
I certainly wouldn’t consider putting salt on it and I if using groundbait I still tend to mix it in ‘as and when’ and don’t leave it sat through a match. On most of our canal fishing its fed neat or double leamed (which it is fine to leave in all day). -

area39ParticipantI bought some today but how can you tell wether it’s from Russia or Poland?
Got a really good match pack for a tenner loads of neat Bloods not in peat and a lively bulk of Joker.Gonna give it a go tomorrow, there again where I’m going I prob won’t need it as I saw 20-odd lb of fish get caught today by one angler on pellet!!
In the snow at a 99% ice free mixed fishery venue too! 🙂

gmanParticipantIf you are used to seeing both you can tell straight away by size. Russian is tiny in comparison. If not get a clear jam jar and fill it with water. Drop in a pinch of joker and watch it for a minute. If it lies pretty dormant chances are its Russian. If odd ones keep ‘dancing’ up off the bottom with a twisting motion its probably Polish.
