What do people consider to be the best version of the Abu closed face reels?

It depends on what you want to use it for. I still use my original 501,great for trotting when it is too windy to use a centrepin. but with lines heavier than 2 or 3 pound bs it isn’t great.
I did buy a new 708 a few years ago but found it tangled inside and I was continually having to remove the bellcover and sort it out. It ended up on ebay.

the old 501, 506 & 506m’s, some prefer the 507’s but I personally find them too bulky

best of the more modern Abu’s is the new 706

I use 506’s, although I have 5 they are all showing their age and was thinking of investing.

Would you recommend the 706 (heard a few moans)

Should have said – i want it for trotting, mainly on small rivers. 501s appear to be readily available and cheap. The new 706 can be purchased for £55 from my local tackle shop. I guess my real question is should I get an old 501/506/7 or a new 706?

I use the original 501s and 506s on the Trent and the Severn, they’re OK for any steady moving water.

I’ve recently found myself prefering an old 704 that I’ve had for ages. It never seemed that smooth until I took one of the pick-up pins and springs out of it, now it’s like new and I’ve got spares.

As an aside, I loaded it with Terry Eustace Pro-Gold 2.4lb specimen line and it’s brilliant for the stick.

I currently have 2 507’s (origanal mk1’s) a 506 & a 706 ,all but the 706 have had the anti-reverse removed and the drag wound up tight ,i only bacwind so in that respect thay’re all the same .i prefer my 507’s for use with my longer rods 14-16ft+ and my 506 for shorter rods . 11/13ft rods

i can recommend the new 706 very sturdy little reel and has a switchable anti-reverse .and comes with spare spools

but the 501’s , 506’s & origanal 507 (not the goldstar 507) all make excellent trotting reels

I think that a new 706 and at least one original 501/506/507 will be acquired and that way I can decide for myself (and indulge in purchasing more reels) what suits me best…
