TF_GaryAre you referring to skimmer rigs? 0.16 – why so light?!
Obviously personal preference, but I would not go less than 0.19 main line if I was fishing for a 100lb+ bag of 3-6lb carp anywhere. I have yet to see a carp with a micrometer, but I have seen plenty of flimsy rigs break after a few hours of bagging…

AnonymousWhy not use 0.30 or even 0.40 if thats the case Gary?
0.16 hook lengths are the excepted best dia for those waters and the size of fish expected on those waters. There are a few double figure fish in Twin Oaks and Acorn. However, i would not be gearing up in line strength just in case i hooked one of those bigger fish. Its all about getting the balance right to get the best from the peg/venue. 0.16 at the moment gives that balance.
Only takes 30 seconds to change a hook length if you feel that there is a need because of damaged line. If i was using 0.40 dia line and it was damaged. I would change that too.

TF_JohnHNot sure if its just me but it seems now that rod and line cleans up most matches down there.
I fished pole on twin oaks last week, peg 18 and could catch next to nothing whilst the guys to my left bagged up fishing method in the margins to the far bank.
They told me generally fish only come onto the pole line at about 3 when matches are usually finishing.
The days of pinging pellets and catching 11m shallow seem to have gone unless on F1s on Jennies or Python.
If on F1 carp 012 is ok but if on lumps 018 would be as light as I would go. Using light elastics and puller kits you could probably go lighter for the lumps but you need to take time getting them in otherwise they will break you.
All down to personal choice of course.
As for margins 021 power line would be first out of my box tied direct with an in line float otherwise be prepared for side eyes to be ripped out regularly. -

TF_JohnHNot much good changing to 020 hook length TB If your main line is 016.

AnonymousClearly using heavier rig line than hook lengths. The question was about hook lengths and not rig line. Point still is that you only need to go as heavy as you need to go to get the best balance for the type and size of fish expected.
The fish do feed on the inside in some matches on both Twin Oaks and Acorn and most of the other lakes at White Acres. However, more matches at the moment are won with rod and line methods tight across on the likes of Twin Oaks and Acorn. Depends on the mood of the fish and how much space the angers get in matches.

TF_GaryTrueBlue, where does it say hooklengths in the original question:
“Hi all what line dia should I make up my pole rigs on for twin oaks high and low and acorn thanks andy”
That might explain why you have suggested much lighter than I would advocate. 0.16 mainline to me means 0.14 hooklength which IMO is far too light for Twin Oaks / Acorn. 0.19 mainline and 0.16/0.17 hooklength is more like it.
In general, I prefer to err on the heavy side. I take your point about it only taking a few seconds to change a hooklength, but if you are changing your hooklength because you have just been seen off by a 12lb beast and I am netting a double figure lump on proper gear at the next peg, you will feel like a complete mug. I know, because I have been there and that is why I now err on the heavy side.

TF_Andy LParticipantRight I’ve tied all my rigs to 0.16 stroft the bs is 3kg about 7lb I think I think this will be ok

TF_JohnHYou are under gunnned Andy, 016 might be ok in the colder weather but in high summer the fish fight much harder. I would have at least a couple of rigs tied up on heavier gear if I was you. I tied loads up on 018 and am now progressively moving to 021, on the rig line I do not think it makes any difference in summer.
I accept in winter when your presentation needs to be more delicate 016 would be better. -

TF_NW Cut AnglerIMO 0.16 should be more than adequate with the correct tensioned elastic and playing fish sensibly. There are plenty of pegs at Whiteacres that the added presentation bonus will get you extra fish. We are talking very heavily fished for fish which unless you are on a noted peg with masses of fish do not simply give themselves up. You are not fishing to obstructions either.
Are some of you not in danger of breaking your poles if you keep going up and up in diameter/BS of line.

AnonymousFriend of mine was down there 3 weeks ago, fished 0.12 and 0.14 all week and came third in the silver from Trelanwy without getting smashed up. Food for thought.

TF_Andy LParticipantI have always fished 0.14 on twin oaks and acorn this year I thought I’d step it up a bit to give me a bit more confidence I don’t think I’ve ever been smashed the only time I think I’ve ever lost fish has been down to hook pulls . Nathan I’ve tied my pellet wag and method hook lengths to 0.18 stroft that’s 8lb do you think this will be ok

TF_NathanWatsonI use 0.18mm on the waggler but 0.20 or 0.22 on the method.
