Why a close season ?

A non uk angler asked me why England has a close season considering that commerical waters and some canals stay open all year round ?
– What is the difference ?
– Surely we need anglers on the banks to scare Cormorants,Otters and people from illegal fishing ? (Anglers are the guardians/bailiffs of the waters)
– Is it not good for tackle trade ?
– Is it not good for fishing clubs for ticket sales ?

WHAT IS THE REAL REASON FOR THE CLOSE SEASON ?
– SO THAT FISH CAN BREED ? , THEY DO BREED IN COMMERCIALS BETWEEN MARCH AND MID-JUNE ??

– WHEN WILL THIS STUPID RULE EVER PHASE OUT ?
– SO I PAY A LICENCE TO FISH RIVERS FOR 9 MONTHS ?

historically, it’s so fish can reproduce in peace and to give water living birds some peace and quiet to nest and lay.

realistically, i think it makes little difference, the wildlife on the commercials, lakes and canals all finds a way still the same.

The reason the close season was brought in was because people were eating fish. In the 1800’s people were very poor and a source of food were fish from the local rivers and ponds. Also with the increased polution around fish were declining.
Therefore a close season was brought in to allow stocks to recover.
This applied to all waters.
As these conditions no longer apply the close season should be recinded and waters opened up.

As an aside cormorants don’t care if people are on the banks, they will either get there before you or after you leave. Some will also feed while you are there.
