ice should be broken when it gets too a certain thickness or has been froze for over a week to let some oxygen in otherwise its like us bein locked in an air tight room u will eventually run out of oxygen. personally i prefer to break my own peg too not owners smashing it too bits it a boat etc so its floating around all day in ur peg. i aint one for gettin on the ice thou to cut a hole when it gets like this its time to stay at home.

ill do it if its not to bad or cold enough to refreeze while your fishing it…
yes it has to be done if its frozen for a while..
ive had some crackin days fishing through the ice..
remember one day when on a 1 acre lake me and my m8 broke the ice together and first drop in we started catching tench after tench!~think

makes you wonder why they came to us when all the rest of the lake was empty~think

Look at Andy pretending to break his own peg, from what I saw last winter he just gets one of his followers to do it for him, I thought it was cruel to make poor old Neil do it for you though.

I agree with Frodo, wouldnt get on to break ice, if its that thick its been cold for a long time so you will catch sod all anyway, stay at home and get the jobs doing that the wife has been nagging about all year then you wont have to stay home when there are fish to catch later in the year.

I,ve always enjoyed breaking the ice. It soon gets you nice and warm on those crisp icy mornings. Then, i,ve normally caught quite a few fish. A few heart stopping moments hanging on to a bonus lump as it swims around under the ice, lol. I broke the ice 5 times out of 6 in my teams of 4 winter league last winter. Had between 18lb and 43lb in those 5 matches. Struggled for 11lb in the one match where the venue was clear of ice but it was still freezing cold. The main thing to remember is. Stay safe!

I think I’d be more concerned about the wind strength:

Had to break ice on several canal matches last winter, and caught fish every time, and on one of the Coventry winter league matches, there were some superb weights caught (Mick Hatchard had 38lb)even after breaking ice that was 2-4 inches thick!!!
