Youngsters hooked on fishing could net themselves a prize in an Environment Agency-sponsored national angling championships.

Castaway 2002 is one of the largest youth angling events in the UK, organised by the National Association of Clubs for Young People and hosted by the Doncaster and District Angling Association.

The event takes place over the weekend of July 13 and 14 at New Junction Canal, near Doncaster. Teams of four and individual anglers will be taking part in the competition and also get the chance to enjoy challenging outdoor activities. Local experts will be on hand to offer their tips to budding anglers.

Agency Fisheries, Ecology and Recreation Manager Chris Firth said: “The Environment Agency is delighted to sponsor such a major angling event for young people.

“Time spent at the waterside certainly helps people of all ages to appreciate the environment and this event is guaranteed to be a fun weekend.”
