Kidderminster angler Matt Maginnis fulfilled a long-standing angling ambition when he won the prestigious River Wye Championships at the weekend.

Matt drew a peg he knows well (96 on the middle of the Eign section) and had no hesitation selecting a 4SSG Dave Harrell Speci Waggler to fish three quarters of the way across the river with bronze maggot.

The tactic saw him land 30 chub between 1lb 8oz and 4lb plus dace for a 72-2-0 winning total. But it was incredibly close, Richard Candy finishing just 2oz behind him. The river fished well with the top six in the 160-pegger all taking over 46lb to the scales.
