The legend that is Dennis ‘Fatha’ White destroyed the field in this years Veterans Championship, with a superb display of hemp fishing from fancied peg 50.
Barnsley man Denis started his match on his favoured bread punch at nine metres. Fishing a 1g rig, Denis soon started to catch small roach, while regularly loose feeding hemp seed over the same area of his peg. Two hours into the match, he slipped a grain of the deadly black seed on the hook, and caught an eight ounce roach on his very first run through! Denis continued catching steadily on the seed thoughout the match, with fish to 12oz gracing his net. At the whistle, he put 7-5-8 on the scales for a convincing and popular win.
In second place was Stan Piecha, who drew unfancied peg 31, and worked hard to put together a mixed net. A pound of bleak on the waggler coupled with 2lb of pole caught gudgeon graced his net in the first four hours, and a late run of quality roach on hemp gave Stan a weight of 6-0-0 exactly for 2nd place.
Third place went to Avon regular Tony Davis. Drawn on peg 1, Tony caught roach, dace and chublets on the waggler, finishing off with some nice perch and eels on the tip. His catch tipped the scales at 5-6-0.
The windy conditions did not prevent the old masters from showing their class, and the many spectators were treated to some wonderful displays of various angling techniques. With fresh water on the cards, and cooler conditions prevailing, this weekends angling festival should really show off the river at its best.
For anyone wanting to come and watch any of the three prestigious matches over this bank holiday, the fishing starts at 11:00 AM and finishes at 4:00PM.
