From the left, third placed Mick Wheeler, champion Neil Powell and runner up Peter Marlow.

NEIL Powell (Hillbilly) won the third running of this excellent charity event, which raised £2500 for the Angler’s Conservation Association, thanks to a perfect two day score.

Neil had an island to cast to on the feeder on the first day on peg 11 on Foundation, and took full advantage to win his section with 98-7-0.

After drawing on the downwind end of Pool 5 on day two, he was always looking dangerous and although there were two other ton-up weights from the lake, Neil duly obliged with a section win thanks to a 140-6-0 bag.

Once he knew he was on fish there was no messing about either day. He fished a big feeder packed with casters, with a bunch of red maggots on a size 10 hook and 8lb line straight through.

“On the second day I knew I was in with a chance, but rather than try and fish long into the corner on the cross wind, I decided to fish the feeder again tight to the reeds to my left,” said Neil. “It was virtually non-stop action and just a case of getting the fish in as quickly as I could. This is a great club and a great festival and I’m really chuffed to pick up the trophy.”

In second spot was Peter Marlow, no relation to fishery owner Roy, who backed up a section winning 100-15-0 on peg 44 Uglies on day one with a section second from Foundation Lake on the second day.

The third man to pick up a trophy was Mick Wheeler. Mick won his section from one off the end of Lake one on day one thanks to a 90-11-0 bag, and finished third from the middle of Pool 6 on day two with 59-2-0.

Pure Fishing stepped in to sponsor the Pairs Trophy with a Suveran Feeder rod to the winners for the second year running.

It was a close run thing with only a point separating the top three, but thank to a weight countback Gavin Goldthorp and Ashley Prestidge picked up the trophy with their 11 point total.

“Many congratulations to Hillybilly – no-one works harder to support all the club events around the country and everyone was delighted for him,” the online club’s Gareth Purnell (Geepster).

“This is the most we have raised for the ACA so far with everyone mucking in,” said. “Special thanks go to Roy Marlow for donating his tremendous fishery for the two days.”
