One of Evesham’s famous barbel made an appearance in Sunday’s Wychavon qualifier, with Alcester sports man Alan Stephens being the lucky man to catch it! The fish, which is nicknamed ‘Broke Back’ due to its unusual shape, fell to a piece of worm presented over a bed of chopped worms and casters on flat float tactics. It pulled the scales around to 9-15-0, giving Alan a total of 12-10-0, with the addition of some small fish that he caught early on waggler.
Second placed Leigh Gardner caught a nice net of perch and eels, mainly on stick float tactics. Drawn on peg 15 on the Town Water, the Shakespeare man fished maggots on the hook, taking fish to 12 oz.
Daiwa Gordon League’s John Curtis came third, with a 9-4-0 net of perch. Drawn on peg 54, John opted to fish a big stick float down the middle of the river – taking fish to 1lb and earning himself a place in the Wychavon Final.
