Customers from Buttle’s builders’ merchants braved inclement weather conditions to ensure the 19th annual fishing tournament could go ahead at Alders Farm Fishery in Milton Keynes.
Buttle’s, which has branches in Leighton Buzzard, Enfield, Kentish Town, and St Albans, first organised the tournament in 2002 to build on a shared passion for angling among staff and customers.
Business development manager Kevin McGrath said: “It was a real privilege to organise the event this year, an event that many of our customers pencil in their diaries before anything else! Our hosts at Alders Farm fishery were excellent, laying on a hearty breakfast, evening meal and expert tactics for our anglers. Our business is built on relationships, both new and established and this event illustrates those perfectly.
Despite six-time winner Martin Funnell being amongst a strong field of fishermen, Tim Pankhurst (pictured with his catch) won the 5-hour fishing match. After catching several carp for a total weight of 72lb 8oz to win, Pankhurst said: “I’m well chuffed… I didn’t think I’d caught that many, but it was a lot of fun and I’ve had a great day.”
Richard Clargo was a close second with 67lb 8oz total weight, with work colleague, and son, Damian Clargo taking third place with 65lb 8oz. Previous winner Martin Funnell landed the largest fish of the day weighing 10lb 8oz.
Alders Farm Fishery has hosted the event over the last few years, with Match Organiser & on-site Pro, Trevor Price delighted to host such an event at a time when social activities have been limited. He said: “These events are important to re-establish contact between supplier & customer. During the pandemic we were able to catch-up on some much-needed work at the fishery – benefitting from a courteous service by Buttle’s too, who we’ll continue to use as a supplier.”
With next year’s event is set to be extra special as Buttle’s prepares for its 20th annual fishing tournament. McGrath added: “We are already planning next year’s event with dates and invitations set to be released in the new year.”
