BRITISH Waterways have contacted Total-Fishing with a view to offering a special rate on club bookings to members of the site.

There are several Saturday dates available in April and May, and BW will knock £1 per man off the normal peg rate to clubs quoting the reference Total-Fishing200 when they book.

That means that rather than pay £5 per man, you will only be paying £4 per man to fish at the prolific Oxfordshire complex.

In common with nearby Drayton Reservoir, Clattercote is unusual in that it is almost completely surrounded by a modern wooden walkway which leads to 122 individual jetty-style pegs which jut out into the water.
Whilst this may sound very artificial, it actually provides an unusually interesting perspective on the fishery whilst giving a solid foundation from which to fish. In fact the creation of the walkway has allowed BW to retain the many trees that surround the water and it’s a beautiful place to fish.

As for the fishing, well like so many of the British Waterways controlled waters it’s simply superb.
Through the winter 20lb weights of silver fish are the norm but come the warmer weather catches are dominated by carp from 1lb 8oz to double figures.
What’s more, you have six feet of water under your feet and the fish come in close. Pole and waggler tactics are usually more productive that the Method feeder.
It’s not all carp, carp, carp though and among the other species likely to stretch your elastic are tench to 7lb, chub to 3lb, crucian carp to over 3lb, perch to 2lb, bream to 3lb, pike to 16lb and a large head of roach to 2lb. In addition to the traditional green tench, British Waterways has also stocked the water with some 150-plus golden tench to 4lb.

Some of the carp are real lumps too. In August 2001, one match angler weighed in two- catch for 37lb!
Clattercote is very easy to find as it is situated close to the M40 four miles from Banbury.
It’s 25 miles from Oxford, 55 miles from West London, 33 miles from Birmingham and 25 miles from Milton Keynes. There’s plenty of parking and refreshments are for sale.

All in all it’s a brilliant water for a club match and a venue where there is every chance of setting a new club record. You can find out more about the venue and tactics required to catch there and view more pictures at www.fisheries.co.uk .
