A NEW big fish competition, known as the Star Hotel Sweepstake, came into being earlier this year and looks set to be a permanent fixture on the Scottish match scene.

With the headquarters based at the Star Hotel in Twynholm, southwest Scotland, which is probably more famous as the old haunt of motor racing superstar David Coulthard, fishing started at 3pm and finished at 9pm.

The inaugural match was fished bang in the middle of a high-pressure system, which meant flat and calm conditions. Fish were extremely scarce, but Kilmarnock’s Alec Bell produced the goods with a total bag weight of 7lb 1oz which included the night’s heaviest fish of 2lb 11oz.
