High Pool (35 pegs) has recently received a mass stocking of small carp, and while any bait will see your pole float disappear beneath the surface, red maggot is as good as any. However, as temperatures rise, red or strawberry flavoured cubes of meat and red sweetcorn will be the tempters for the bigger carp (well into double figures) on all pools. Why red or strawberry? Dunno is the answer but it works at Woodland View! Deeper water is normally the key, which puts High Pool in the frame, but don’t be surprised if the fish come up in the water, even at this time of the year. Front Deans (33 pegs) and Back Deans (31) are always worth a visit if the maggot feeder is your forte. Just lob the ‘plastic pig’ out into the deeper water in the middle and wait for the tip to go into ‘bend mode’. I’d take some fluro pinkies with me if the thermals are required and my red maggots would get rolled around on my thigh before baiting-up … just to soften ’em up! Day tickets are £6 and concessions fish for a fiver, with a half-day ticket, from 1.00pm, costs £4.50.
