Surface fishing for carp is without doubt one of the most visually exciting, and frustrating way to target carp.

Visually exciting because you can see the fish taking your offerings and making their way towards your hook bait… frustrating because nine times out of ten, they eat all the free offerings and ignore the one with the hook attached.

However, there are lots of ways of tipping the balance in your favour, and here our carp ace Ian Russell visits Thorpe Lea Fishery in Essex to put some of them into practice.

Ian’s joined by carp fanatic Neil Hoare, a competent carper who wants to learn more about how to catch carp off the top.

In another highly enjoyable and informative programme from the Carp Channel Monthly team, Ian passes on bundles of bait, tackle and presentation tips that will make all the difference between you ending up pulling your hair out and beating the nearest tree with your rod on your next surface fishing session; or (more preferably) striking a posing with a hard-fighting mirror or common carp.
